Mint Hill

Like the Native Americans who once camped here, Mint Hill's early settlers were attracted to the Rocky River area by the many creeks and streams that cross the land. Rich soil, a mild climate, and the availability of large tracts of land made this an ideal place to live. The area grew as an agricultural community where early farmers had to rely on their industrious and self-sufficient natures to supply their basic needs. As the population increased, blacksmiths, tanners, and wheelwrights became common. With the invention of the cotton gin and the convenience of the Allen railroad station, farmers in the area found cotton to be a rewarding crop. The years have brought many changes to this once-rural farming area. While opening its arms to diversity and growth, Mint Hill continues to retain its country charm.

"The following collection of poems is a reflection of my own experiences serving with the US Army in Afghanistan, and the effect that those experiences had on my life after returning to civilian life. Section I begins with the knowledge of impending war while still in the civilian setting, then moves into the combat zone and my early thoughts on this new life. Section II deals with the heart of combat experiences and time 'in country.' These continue into Section III, which then tapers off into my journey back to the US. Section IV opens with the soldier's triumphant return home, but quickly turns to explore the aftermath and psychological impact war has on the young individual. While these poems have their foundations strongly rooted in actual events, and they are arranged in nearly the chronological order of those actual events, some creative liberties have been taken in voice, chronology, and the combining of specific events and people"--Abstract, leaf iii.
