In Europe, forest policy discussions are moving towards a European-Union-wide strategy. This will further strengthen the relations between the European countries in the field of forests and forest management. European-wide forest planning and decision-making require that policy-makers have insight in the long-term development of European forests under alternative regimes. The European Forest Information Scenario Model (EFISCEN) was used to make projections of the development of the European forests under four different scenarios. This book addresses the consequences of each scenario for wood production, biodiversity, and the environmental functions of the forest. The results provide policy-makers with a challenge of whether to intervene in the ongoing trend of build-up of growing stock and whether to choose between enhancing biodiversity, increasing the use of domestically produced wood products, or to combine them.

This report provides a complete methodological description of the Dutch National System for Greenhouse gas Reporting of the LULUCF sector for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The methodologies follow the IPCC 2006 guidelines for Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land-Uses (AFOLU). Based on these guidelines, this report provides detailed descriptions and motivations of the used methods, activity data, and emission factors for calculation of the emissions and removals as reported in the National Inventory Report (NIR). The structure of the report follows the structure for national inventory reports as laid out in the appendix to Decision 24/CP. 19 of the UNFCCC.

The aim of this study was to compare estimates of the Net Ecosystem Exchange by two different methods for a small pine forest in the Netherlands. The inventory based carbon budgetting method estimated the average NEE for 1997 - 2001 at 202 g C m-2 yr-1, with a confidence interval of 138 - 271 g C m-2 yr-1. The estimate obtained by the eddy covariance method was 295 g C m-2 yr-1 on average for the same period, with a confidence interval of 224 - 366 g C m-2 yr-1. Uncertainties in both methods are assessed, and recommendations are given for future research.

Forests contribute considerably to the terrestrial carbon sink. Although the speed of uptake is generally low, the stocks in both biomass and soil are high. Within the Kyoto Protocol, active forest management can be used to reach the goals for emission reduction. In this report, an extensive list of measures is compiled detailing the ways in which forestry could contribute to an enhanced sink, or could reduce emissions. Most measures in forest management will have small effects, and these effects will generally only become visible in the long term. Effective measures can be divided into three categories; firstly, those that protect existing carbon stocks. Such measures include avoiding defor...
