Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders include many of the most common conditions encountered in clinical practice, affecting women and men , children and the elderly equally. This book is designed primarily for overseas readers. It aims to provide real-life case studies and references for teachers and students of international TCM, acupuncture colleges, acupuncturists, and biomedical doctors who are interested in TCM and acupuncture. It is also geared to the general reader to familiarize them with the advantages of treating ophthalmic and otolaryngological disorders with TCM. This book is practical and is highly readability. It took more than two years to complete. During the writing process, there were many group discussions where the book was reviewed and revised. However, despite the authors’ best efforts, this book is still a work on progress. We invite the readers to send their comments, corrections and suggestions to supplement, amend, and improve when reprinted.

Foreign Exchange Intervention and the Australian Dollar

Since the Australian dollar was floated in December 1983, the Australian central bank (Reserve Bank of Australia) has actively intervened in the foreign exchange market. Using daily exchange rate and official intervention data from January 1984 to December 2001, this paper examines what effects, if any, foreign exchange operations by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) have had on the level and volatility of the Australian dollar exchange rate. First, using an event study we evaluate the effectiveness of intervention by examining its direct effect on the level of the exchange rate. We find that over the period 1997-2001, the RBA has had some success in its intervention operations, by moderat...

Real Exchange Rate Volatility

A recent study by Grilli and Kaminsky (1991) argues that real exchange rate (RER) behavior is likely to be dependent on the particular historical period rather than on the nominal exchange rate arrangement itself. This paper reexamines RER behavior using alternative data sets, as well as different econometric methods, over the period 1880-1997. It finds strong evidence supporting the nonneutrality hypothesis of nominal exchange regime on RER volatility. Also, regime shifts play an important role in determining the persistence of shocks to the RER.

Navigating through an extensive compilation of surface modification reactions and processes for specific tribological results, this reference compiles detailed studies, many not found in other texts, on various residual stresses, reaction processes and mechanisms, heat treatment methods, plasma-based techniques, laser impingement, nanometer scale surface modification, and more. Surface Modification and Mechanisms: Friction, Stress, and Reaction Engineering offers guidelines for the consideration and design of wear and frictional performance and provides a unique understanding of surface structural changes that occur during various engineering procedures.

Illustrating their intersecting role in manufacturing and technological development, this book examines tribological principles and their applications in CMP, including integrated circuits, basic concepts in surfaces of contacts, and common defects as well as friction, lubrication fundamentals, and the basics of wear. The book concludes its focus with mechanical aspects of CMP, pad materials, elastic modulus, and cell buckling. As the first source to integrate CMP and tribology, Tribology in Chemical-Mechanical Planarization provides applied scientists and engineers in the fields of semiconductors and microelectronics with clear foresight to the future of this technology.
