A History of Muhlenberg County
Johnstone's account is of the long-established families of the Dumfriesshire region of Scotland and, secondarily, of the so-called "Border Wars" which were waged from the twelfth century between the dominant Scottish families of South Dumfriesshire and the English in North Cumberland. Our reprint is from the important second edition, which contains an expanded chapter on the Border Wars.

Christian County had published a county history in 1841 by Perin and again another by Charles Meachem in 1930. Both of these histories had a limited biography section in them. Under the leadership of president Lon Bostick, the Genealogical Society of Christian County and the many devoted people of the county at large, gave untiringly of their time and knowledge to compile and have published a third history of Christian County in 1986 which is primarily a family history with much social history. The people responded well with material and the book was getting so large that we had to stop receiving family histories. This left many without the opportunity to get their families recorded. Late in 1990, Lon had a job started and was not complete therefore the Odd Fellows of Green River Lodge #54 of Hopkinsville and Jewel Rebekah Lodge #14 (the auxiliary of the Odd Fellows) met and voted to compile and have published a continuation of Volume I of the Family Histories to be titled Edition I of Family Histories of Christian County.

This volume pertains principally to the history of Muhlenberg County from its beginning in 1798 to the year 1875, but is extended briefly in some practical aspects to 1910. Mr. Rothert relied heavily on numerous interviews with every "oldest citizen" in the area, and from them and some of their children and grandchildren he gathered materials from which much of this work was produced. Woven into this narrative is information discovered from existing records regarding landmarks; county boundaries; education, participants in the War of 1812; the Mexican War; Muhlenberg in the Civil War; various industries, etc. In addition to the biographical sketches, there are more than 200 photographs and illustrations contained in the book. Roadside History
Published by the Kentucky Historical Society and distributed by the University Press of Kentucky We have all spied them as we blast down I-75 scanning the roadside for anything of interest or rolled past one while trying to find an elusive gas station in an unfamiliar small town. Perhaps we have even stopped to read one outside the local courthouse. Since 1949, the Kentucky Historical Highway Marker program has erected more than 1,800 markers that highlight the rich diversity of the state's local and regional history as well as topics of statewide, and sometimes national, importance.
