Local knowledge refers to knowledge and expertise, which originate from local and indigenous cultures that have developed over time. Its practices have been absorbed naturally and effortlessly into the local communities. However, due to globalization and modernization, much of this knowledge has not been practiced and will be lost in time if efforts are not taken to preserve, conserve and transfer it to the community. Through the discussion of six articles written based on local and international research findings, this book brings together researchers committed to local knowledge in sharing the process of documentation on local knowledge transfer issues and challenges, and the methodology of knowledge transfer. Thus, new ideas are presented to promote the practice of preserving and conserving local knowledge to the practitioners, students and communities.

Self-regulated learning is an important new area of research on college learning and teaching. The purpose of this volume of New Directions for Teaching and Learning is to provide a sampling of some of the central issues regarding self-regulated learning in college courses and classrooms. These issues include the definition of self-regulated learning, how to improve students' self-regulated learning, and how faculty can use the ideas from this research to improve their own teaching. The chapters in this volume reflect current research and thinking about self-regulated learning for college students. While more research and development is needed on this topic, the authors provide an immediate context for efforts to improve college learning and teaching. This textbook aims to provide a selective, but representative, review of work in cognitive development, grouped around themes that are familiar from textbooks of adult cognition. The book focuses on the question of what develops, rather than on why it develops. The findings of a given experimental study what develops are generally fixed, but the interpretation of what particular findings mean why is fluid. Some of the experiments discussed in this book have alternative explanations, and every student interested in children's cognition is invited to develop their own ideas about what different studies mean.
