Sixteenth-century Italian Drawings in New York Collections

Summary Catalogue of European Paintings in the J. Paul Getty Museum
This catalogue contains a reproduction and complete description of each of the more than four hundred European paintings in the collection of the Museum, including the important new acquisitions, among them Fra Bartolommeo’s Rest on the Flight into Egypt, Jan van de Capella’s Shipping in a Calm, and Paul Cézanne’s Still Life with Apples. It also reflects the latest research regarding attribution and dating. An introduction by David Jaffé, curator of paintings at the Museum, explores the collecting activities and tastes of J. Paul Getty, who founded the Museum and was responsible for its earliest acquisitions.
Maiolica in the Making
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, potters from the Italian village of Castelli dAbruzzo created wares that constitute a final, supremely pictorial phase of the tin-glazed earthenware art know as maiolica. Here, Catharine Hess documents the Gentili/Barabei archive--a recently acquired collection of 276 documents relating to these celebrated ceramics--to show how it illuminates the production of maiolica.
Dosso Dossi
Dosso's rich color schemes are akin to those of his fellow North Italian Titian; he learned something about innovative composition from Raphael and about the force of the body from Michelangelo. But his paintings have a very individual appeal. In leafy natural surroundings containing an array of animals and heavenly bodies, events unfold that are often enigmatic, enacted by characters whose interrelationships elude definition.
Vermeer and the Delft School

Seven lengthy, well-illustrated chapters (Liedtke wrote five, Dutch art historians Michiel Plomp and Marten Jan Bok wrote the others) describe life in the city of Delft; the painters Carel Fabritius, Leonart Bramer, and others who preceded Vermeer; the careers of Vermeer and De Hooch; the making of drawings and prints in 17th-century Delft; and the collecting of art in the same period.
