Vita Edwardi Secundi

The Vita Edwardi Secundi is the best and most readable of the chronicles of the reign of Edward II, and throws a fascinating light on the world of high politics. The anonymous author was close to the centre of politics, probably a royal clerk, and possibly John Walwayn (or someone with a similar career). Robert Winchelsey and the Crown 1294-1313

This is the first detailed study of the career of one of the most important medieval archbishops of Canterbury. Robert Winchelsey sought to defend ecclesiastical rights and liberties at a time when the English Church was under constant pressure from the king and his government, and he suffered suspension from office as a result of his opposition to Edward I. The theme of the book is the relationship of this learned and saintly archbishop with the Crown during the last troubled years of Edward I's reign and the first equally troubled years of Edward II's reign.

Religious Conflict at Canterbury Cathedral in the Late Twelfth Century

The first comprehensive study of a bitter dispute which occupied the archbishops and monks of Canterbury throughout the 1180s and 1190s. For fifteen years the monks of Christ Church Canterbury waged a war against their archbishop, over a plan to build a church to provide funds for their administration, dedicated to Thomas Becket. Fearing the loss of their most beloved (and lucrative) saint to this new institution, the monks embarked on a course of action which saw rioting in the streets of Canterbury, their excommunication, and the cathedral placed under siege by the archbishop. Although at first glance an internal dispute between the archbishop and his cathedral chapter, it had a wide-rangi...
