This is the first volume to appear under the joint editorship of J.P. Hirth and F.R.N. Nabarro. While Volume 11 concentrated on the single topic of dislocations and work hardening, the present volume spreads over the whole range of the study of dislocations from the application by Kléman and his colleagues of homotopy theory to classifying the line and point defects of mesomorphic phases to Chaudhri's account of the experimental observations of dislocations formed around indentations.Chapter 64, by Cai, Bulatove, Chang, Li and Yip, discusses the influence of the structure of the core of a dislocation on its mobility. The power of modern computation allows this topic to be treated from the f...

Scientific Advances in Alternative Demilitarization Technologies

Scientific Advances in Alternative Demilitarization Technologies

This book assesses a broad range of technologies, proposed throughout the world as alternatives to incineration, for the destruction of chemical warfare agents. Treatment of metal parts and explosive or energetic material is considered as a secondary issue. The technologies are grouped into three categories, based on process bulk operating temperature: low (0-200°C), medium (200-600°C), and high (600-3500°C). The reactions considered include hydrolysis, oxidation, electrochemistry, hydrogenation, and pyrolysis. The technologies include a broad spectrum of processes, some of which have been studied only in the laboratory, whereas others are in commercial use for the destruction of hazardous and toxic wastes. Audience: Provides engineers and decision makers with an understanding of the state of development of alternative technologies.

Physics of Biomaterials: Fluctuations, Selfassembly and Evolution

Physics of Biomaterials: Fluctuations, Selfassembly and Evolution

Recent years have seen a growing interest in and activity at the interface between physics and biology, with the realization that both subjects have a great deal to learn from and to teach to one another. A particularly promising aspect of this interface concerns the area of cooperative phenomena and phase transitions. The present book addresses both the structure and motion of biological materials and the increasingly complex behaviour that arises out of interactions in large systems, giving rise to self organization, adaptation, selection and evolution: concepts of interest not only to biology and living systems but also within condensed matter physics. The approach adopted by Physics of Biomaterials: Fluctuations, Self Assembly and Evolution is tutorial, but the book is fully up to date with the latest research. Written at a level appropriate to graduate researchers, preferably with a background either in condensed matter physics or theoretical or physically-oriented experimental biology.

Wild Bill Donovan

"Entertaining history...Donovan was a combination of bold innovator and imprudent rule bender, which made him not only a remarkable wartime leader but also an extraordinary figure in American history" (The New York Times Book Review). He was one of America's most exciting and secretive generals--the man Franklin Roosevelt made his top spy in World War II. A mythic figure whose legacy is still intensely debated, "Wild Bill" Donovan was director of the Office of Strategic Services (the country's first national intelligence agency) and the father of today's CIA. Donovan introduced the nation to the dark arts of covert warfare on a scale it had never seen before. Now, veteran journalist Douglas ...
