The honor of the Science of Tafsir is grand and the reward of spreading it is magnificent. We have attempted to translate into the English language the interpretation of the Thirtieth (30th) part of the Qur'an (Juz' ^Amma) and the Opening Chapter (Surah al-Fatihah). We relied in our endeavor on precious books of interpretation in the Arabic language, like the Tafsir of An-Nasafiyy, Al-Bahr Al-Muhit, authored by Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusiyy, and one of the most competent and reliable interpretations that was compiled by the Research Division of the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects. It is entitled "AD-DURR AL-MASUN FI TAFSIR JUZ' ^AMMA YATASA'LUN."

Canadian Islamic Schools

Religious schooling in Canada has been a controversial subject since the secularization of the public school system, but there has been little scholarship on Islamic education. In this ethnographic study of four full-time Islamic schools, Jasmin Zine explores the social, pedagogical, and ideological functions of these alternative, and religiously-based educational institutions. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork and interviews with forty-nine participants, Canadian Islamic Schools provides significant insight into the role and function that Islamic schools have in Diasporic, Canadian, educational, and gender-related contexts. Discussing issues of cultural preservation, multiculturalism, s...

The Barber of Damascus

This book is about a barber, Shihab al-Din Ahmad Ibn Budayr, who shaved and coiffed, and probably circumcised and healed, in Damascus in the 18th century. The barber may have been a "nobody," but he wrote a history book, a record of the events that took place in his city during his lifetime. Dana Sajdi investigates the significance of this book, and in examining the life and work of Ibn Budayr, uncovers the emergence of a larger trend of history writing by unusual authors—people outside the learned establishment—and a new phenomenon: nouveau literacy. The Barber of Damascus offers the first full-length microhistory of an individual commoner in Ottoman and Islamic history. Contributing to Ottoman popular history, Arabic historiography, and the little-studied cultural history of the 18th century Levant, the volume also examines the reception of the barber's book a century later to explore connections between the 18th and the late 19th centuries and illuminates new paths leading to the Nahda, the Arab Renaissance.
