This book presents an introduction to viscoelasticity, in particular, to the theories of dilute polymer solutions and dilute suspensions of rigid particles in viscous and incompressible fluids. These theories are important, not just because they apply to practical problems of industrial interest, but because they form a solid theoretical base upon which mathematical techniques can be built, from which more complex theories can be constructed, to better mimic material behaviour. The emphasis of this book is not on the voluminous current topical research, but on the necessary tools to understand viscoelasticity. This is a compact book for a first year graduate course in viscoelasticity and mod...

Indochina

Combining new approaches with a groundbreaking historical synthesis, this is the most thorough and up-to-date general history of French Indochina available in English. Unique in its wide-ranging attention to economic, social, intellectual, and cultural dimensions, it is the first book to treat Indochina's entire history, from its inception to Cochinchina in 1858 to its crumbling at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and on to decolonization. The authors tell this story from a perspective that is neither Eurocentric nor nationalistic but that carefully considers the positions of both the colonizers and the colonized. With this approach, they are able to move beyond descriptive history into rich exploration of the ambiguities and complexities of the French colonial period in Indochina.-- Back cover

Chris Burden is a seminal figure in contemporary art. His performances in the 1970s redefined the possibilities of the medium; his subsequent sculpture and installations have sought to extend the limits of the physical and explore the psychological impact on the individual of actions and objects in the world. This book, the first substantial monograph on Burden in twenty years, gives a complete overview of his art, illuminated by searching texts by some of the most important curators and writers on art today and supported by a complete catalogue. Edited in close collaboration with the artist, its thematic arrangement reveals the conceptual relationships between works produced in widely differing mediums. Illustrated with all the major works by the artist, and with many unrealized projects, Chris Burden is the definitive book on one of the most influential and controversial artists of recent decades.
