This edited collection examines the development of Atlantic World architecture after 1492. In particular, the chapters explore the landscapes of extraction as material networks that brought people, space, and labor together in harvesting raw materials, cultivating agriculture for export-level profits, and circulating raw materials and commodities in Europe, Africa, and the Americas from 1500 to 1850. This book argues that histories of extraction remain incomplete without careful attention to the social, physical, and mental nexus that is architecture, just as architecture’s development in the last 500 years cannot be adequately comprehended without attention to empire, extraction, colonial...
Care and Pandemic captures an up-to-the-moment account of COVID-19 and its aftermath by an interdisciplinary network of transatlantic scholars reporting from Brazil, Colombia, and France. Case studies diagnose the problem, revealing socio-demographic dynamics of care labor markets, outlining the impact of online care platforms on the conditions of care work, and providing caring strategies rooted in community solidarity. Creating a robust and more resilient care organization requires a comprehensive understanding of why systems failed to build capacity that can absorb external shocks and address structural changes before, during, and after disasters. Contributors are: Gabriela Alkmin, Marian...
Data from Brazil shows an increase in obesity and non-communicable diseases, which is related to the expansion of the participation of ultra-processed food products in diets and in the food environment, displacing fresh and minimally processed foods and meals prepared with them. One of the solutions to improve food environments requires the implementation of effective and adequate food labeling regulations, including front-of-package labeling. This policy tool has the potential to inform the consumers about the nutrients, ingredients, or any other component of public health concern contained in the products and facilitate healthier food choices.
"This book discusses how some works of art produced in Latin America in the sixties, seventies, and eighties forged a different understanding of the female body, understood as space for the expression of a dissident subjectivity in relation to socially normalized places. Representations of art and of feminist activism interrogated the disciplining of the female body that entails as well the disciplining of the male body. Before a history of highly regulated artistic representations-regardless of the occasional exceptions a historian might point out-images erupted that questioned the social and institutional naturalization of the feminine and the masculine"--
