The Linguistics of Charisma

The Linguistics of Charisma

Charisma is seen as an innovative, dynamic and inspiring force. But it also has a seductive and manipulative side. Why do so many politicians have so much charisma? Which linguistic aspects make a person charismatic? And are there similarities, for example in their use of language, their way of expressing themselves? This work aims to find answers to these questions. It analyses a wide range of past and present public figures in several countries such as Germany (Helmut Schmidt, Angela Merkel), France (Charles de Gaulle, Emmanuel Macron), Great Britain (Margaret Thatcher, Boris Johnson), the United States (John F. Kennedy, Donald Trump), and also Ukraine (Yulia Tymoshenko, Volodymyr Zelensky). The author points out charisma’s indicators and how to identify their linguistic aspects. She develops a methodology for indexing past charismatics and determining future ones. Her findings are of interest for all specialists in the humanities studying the interrelationships between language, personality, media, and culture.

Max Weber

Max Weber (1864-1920) is recognized throughout the world as the most important classic thinker in the social sciences – there is simply no one in the history of the social sciences who has been more influential. The affinity between capitalism and protestantism, the religious origins of the Western world, the force of charisma in religion as well as in politics, the all-embracing process of rationalization and the bureaucratic price of progress, the role of legitimacy and of violence as offsprings of leadership, the ‘disenchantment’ of the modern world together with the never-ending power of religion, the antagonistic relation between intellectualism and eroticism: all these are key co...

Rhetoric and Politics

Paradoxically, the term 'rhetoric' functions nowadays both as a name of an antique, even obsolete framework of research and as a fashionable buzzword that entails virtually any form of persuasive communication. Reflecting a growing scholarly interest in political discourses, this volume offers systematic, theoretically grounded insights into the flow of persuasion that constitutes politics today. Authors combine the interest in rhetoric within politics with different disciplinary orientations ...

How could this have happened? On 23 June 2016, UK voters elected to leave the European Union. The result was perhaps the biggest bombshell in modern British political history. In this new and updated edition of Denis MacShane's bestselling history of the UK's relationship with Europe, the former Europe Minister reveals the full story behind Britain's historic EU Referendum decision. Denis MacShane was the only senior Remainer to have called the EU Referendum result correctly and his book provides the essential context to the new political and economic landscape of Brexit Britain. -- Provided by publisher.
