Indian Agriculture
Population explosions have always pushed India into many deep-rooted socio-economic bottlenecks. India is home to one third of the globe’s poverty-ridden and hunger-prone population, despite the undoubted availability of and access to food grains. This study explores the causes of and solutions to the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition at the grassroots level. Although India’s spending on protecting its boundaries has increased massively, there does not seem to have been as much emphasis on protecting its citizens. There can be no doubt that food security involves the simultaneous growth in demand and supply of food grains. As such, the book analyses the supply-side background behind the accomplishment of food security. It explores the nature, prospects and challenges ahead for Indian agriculture. Food grain production can be enhanced on a par with increasing demand only when hurdles confronting agriculture are addressed.
THE EFFECT OF IRON ORE MINING ON ENVIRONMENT & IT’S REGULATION IN INDIA
Mining refers to the process of extracting minerals and metals from the crust of the earth. Some minerals can be mined more easily as they are found on the earth’s surface, while others lie far beneath the surface and can be obtained only by digging deep underground. Gold, Silver, Diamond, Iron, Coal, Aluminum (Bauxite) and Uranium are some of the vast array of metals and minerals that are obtained by the latter process. In fact, mining is the source of all the substances that cannot be obtained by industrial processes or through agriculture. Mining, in its wider sense connotes extracting and processing of a non - renewable mineral resource. Minerals can be classified into metallic (iron, copper, gold, aluminum, uranium etc.) and non-metallic (sand, salt, phosphates etc.) These minerals are non-renewable or depleting assets and once mined-out, they are exhausted and are lost forever without any chance of replenishment. Simply, this exhaustible resource cannot be harvested, unlike agricultural products.

The Naxal Threat
Naxalism or Left Wing extremism is a major internal security threat faced by India. Though Naxalism predates independence, it was limited to small pockets of areas but now has spread to underdeveloped areas from Bihar to Tamil Nadu. It is a well organized underground movement with an ideological base in rural areas spread over in the interior of many states. The Naxal movement is a complex socio- politico- economic phenomenon. Their violent methods against the government officials, law and order agencies and business community are causes, needing immediate and serious attention. This volume is a compilation of five papers presented at a workshop organized by CSA in August 2010.
