No Ordinary Bloke

When the tsunami hit Asia on Boxing Day, 2004, it claimed hundreds of thousands of lives - but changed, and probably saved, the life of Donny Paterson. the former army engineer, with a history of chronic injuries, depression and addiction, was floating somewhere above rock bottom - aimless, traumatised, anchored only by his family - in particular, wife tracey and the promising rugby league career of his son, future Newcastle Knights player, Corey. But something in the shocking devastation of the tsunami moved him. Within days, Donny was on a plane to Sri Lanka. Landing in Colombo he met three fellow travellers and together they took a chance and drove south. Arriving in the shattered village of Peraliya, they found a community without, food, water, medicine, homes or livelihood. the events that followed were remarkable ... a rescue effort, a village saved, an award-winning documentary, red-carpet treatment at film festivals, and, for Donny, a Cannes penthouse stay as guest of actor Sean Penn. How could this have happened to an ordinary Aussie bloke? Rough diamond Donny is proof of what can occur when the extraordinary deep within is tapped.

Andrew 'Cad' Cadigan is the only person to have walked solo around Australia also taking in Tasmania. He trooped 15,000km averaging 43km a day in honour of his mate 'Simmo' who died of a rare blood disorder at age 24. He was 29 when he quit his job, sold his home and, with little preparation, left Sydney two days after Christmas, pushing a pram with his provisions and headed south. In the ensuing 18 months he suffered depression, extreme loneliness and physical pain - at times walking 50km a day in 40 degree-plus heat - but refused to surrender, becoming only the third person to navigate the continent on foot without a support crew. Along the way he endeared himself to hundreds of people fro...

Out of the Shadows

Rugby league's 'King', as you've never seen him Wally Lewis will forever be known to rugby league fans as 'the King'. He could do what appeared to be impossible on the field and yet, unbeknown to those around him, including his family and closest friends, he managed to perform at the most elite level while hiding a secret. When he finally revealed to a stunned public that he'd been living with epilepsy for years, he did so just prior to undergoing life-saving brain surgery for the neurological disorder. Wally talks of the difficulty he had in facing major surgery and the emotional and physical impact of his deteriorating condition, including a dramatic virtual 'blackout' on air in 2006. Interestingly, Wally dealt with his only daughter's deafness publicly, all the while keeping his own crisis so profoundly private. Following a successful procedure, Wally has gone on to work with epilepsy organisations to raise awareness about the disorder, helping de-stigmatise the condition and inspiring others to live positively with epilepsy. In 2008, he was included in the Australian and Queensland teams of the century during the Centenary Year of the League.

Greats of Origin

In 1980 the State of Origin series was born at Lang Park in front of a crowd of 33,000, a hard-fought game in an electrifying atmosphere. Little has changed in three decades, the intensity and determination of the players running onto the field is the stuff from legends. Only now it has become Australia's premier sporting event, attracting a huge television audience and constantly sells out the stadium. 167 players have put on the Maroon jersey, 237 for the Blues. After 30 years of competition, of pride representing their state, there is little more memorable than these clashes and the iconic memories taken from the epic victories: Steve Mortimer on his knees, punching the ground in relief i...

Talent Is Not Enough

Danny Buderus is a record maker in the toughest rugby league competition in the world. The New South Wales captain in every match from 2004-2008, Buderus holds the record for most successive appearances (21) of any NSW State of Origin player as well as most as captain (15). Added to that he was unchallenged as Australia's Test hooker from 2001-06 when he controversially decided to stand down to witness the birth of his wife Kris’ first baby. This is not a traditional autobiography tracking the career of the Dally M Medal winner and grand final victor from the Newcastle Knights, but a revealing insight into the pressures, demands and lifestyles of professional rugby league at the highest le...
