Podcasting: New Aural Cultures and Digital Media is the first comprehensive interdisciplinary collection of academic research exploring the definition, status, practices and implications of podcasting through a Media and Cultural Studies lens. By bringing together research from experienced and early career academics alongside audio and creative practitioners, the chapters in this volume span a range of approaches in a timely reaction to podcasting’s zeitgeist moment. In conceptualizing the podcast, the contributors examine its liminal status between the mechanics of ‘old’ and ‘new’ media and between differing production contexts, in addition to podcasting’s reliance on mainstream industrial structures whilst retaining an alternative, even outsider, sensibility. In the present tumult of online media discourse, the contributors frame podcasting as indicative of a ‘new aural culture’ emerging from an identifiable set of industrial, technological and cultural circumstances. Since its outbreak, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been shaped by international involvement. These external engagements in the conflict are primarily transmitted to Jewish Israelis through the Israeli mass media. These media portrayals shape not only perceptions of the “global” attitudes towards the conflict, but in so doing they also influence and legitimize domestic political debates and decisions. This research is guided by the question how Israeli newspapers represent international involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. How is the involvement contextualized and how qualified? Do societal constructs and beliefs shape the media representations and if so, in which manner? Do media representations differ in times of crisis and routine? Margret Müller explores these questions in a content analysis of the four general daily Israeli newspapers’ media coverage during the Gaza flotilla raid 2010.
The Republic of Turkey has long aspired to join Europe both politically and culturally. However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.

Die Lebenswirklichkeit von Muslimen wird häufig verzerrt und unzureichend abgebildet. In Zeiten zunehmend individualisierter Medienproduktion stellt sich die Frage, ob nicht längst alternative muslimische Öffentlichkeiten eine ergänzende Informationsquelle bieten. Gerade neuere Medienformen wie Weblogs erweitern die Repräsentations- und Handlungsspielräume von Muslimen. Die vorliegende Studie hat erstmals umfassend muslimische Weblogs im deutschsprachigen Internet untersucht. Sie zeichnet ein sehr differenziertes Bild der als Muslimosphäre bezeichneten virtuellen Diskursgemeinschaft. Die Ergebnisse sind ambivalent: Von einer kohärenten muslimischen Blogosphäre lässt sich angesichts einer inneren Spaltung in islamophobe und islamophile Blogs nicht sprechen. Allerdings wird auch deutlich, dass ein Teil der muslimischen Blogs durchaus zu einer facettenreicheren Darstellung des Islam beitragen kann.
