Biological Diversity

One of the cornerstones of life's wonders is the vast array of species filling the planet. From plants to animals to humans, there is no shortage of beings to provide 'spice of life' variety is said to be. Periodically, scientists announce the discovery of a 'new' form of life, so it seems as if Earth is capable of producing new species just to keep us on our toes. At times, the immense breadth of living things can even feel overwhelming, as one pauses to ponder how numerically insignificant humans are when compared to the insect population. Given the biological diversity of the planet, it is incumbent upon humans to safeguard the natural beauty of the environment. To that end, conservation ...

New threat scenarios include global environmental hazards, poverty generated mass migrations, and international terrorism which in view of the still not satisfactorily solved problem of containing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction has taken on a new dimension. Although undeniably the task of meeting these challenges is an instrinsically political one, there can be no serious doubt that respective political steps to cope with these global threats to the well-being of humankind cannot be effectively taken without an adequate and enforceable legal framework. It is quite evident that such international or global legal framework cannot be designed on the basis of a traditional sove...

Science librarian Smith (Western Kentucky U.) cites literature both on the biological study of diversity itself, and on the socio-natural science of diversity conservation. The main part lists over 5,700 monographs and articles, and the second identifies a selection of over 100 special issues of serial publications in which the main theme is related to biodiversity studies. The entries include ratings of the number of citations the work has received in the literature, and key words. The indexes are by general subject, geography, and organism. Legal control and ownership of plants and traditional knowledge of the uses of plants (TKUP) is a vexing issue. The phenomenon of appropriation of plants and TKUP, otherwise known as biopiracy, thrives in a cultural milieu where non-Western forms of knowledge are systemically marginalized and devalued as "folk knowledge" or characterized as inferior. Global Biopiracy rethinks the role of international law and legal concepts, the Western-based, Eurocentric patent systems of the world, and international agricultural research institutions as they affect legal ownership and control of plants and TKUP.

Brigadier oversteekmoeder
