The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott

Billie Scott is an artist. Her debut gallery exhibition opens in a few months. Within a fortnight she'll be completely blind. Zoe Thorogood's first graphic novel is a story about what it's like to get something you want, have it immediately taken away from you and then how you put it all back together again. Set in a world of people down on their luck from Middlesbrough to London, it's a graphic novel that speaks of post-austerity Britain and the problems facing those left behind. This book is debut work of an exciting author who is a great new talent in the world of comics.

The Fruit of Liberty

In the middle decades of the sixteenth century, the republican city-state of Florence--birthplace of the Renaissance--failed. In its place the Medici family created a principality, becoming first dukes of Florence and then grand dukes of Tuscany. The Fruit of Liberty examines how this transition occurred from the perspective of the Florentine patricians who had dominated and controlled the republic. The book analyzes the long, slow social and cultural transformations that predated, accompanied, and facilitated the institutional shift from republic to principality, from citizen to subject. More than a chronological narrative, this analysis covers a wide range of contributing factors to this t...

he doctrine of the Trinity developed in response to a range of theological interests—among them the project of reconciling claims about the divinity of Christ with monotheism and massaging Christian doctrine into the ambient (largely Platonic) philosophical framework of the period. More recently the Trinity doctrine has been deployed to promote normative claims concerning human nature, human relationships and social justice. During the past two decades analytic philosophers of religion have increasingly engaged with the doctrine. There are, however, a number of foundational questions that have not been addressed in the philosophical literature. The Trinity: A Philosophical Investigation considers the competing accounts of the Trinity doctrine, whether orthodox or heterodox, and aims to respond to objections and explicate their motivations and entailments.

The Medieval Stained Glass of St Peter Mancroft, Norwich

  • Categories: Art

"The medieval stained glass of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, is the most important collection in a country rich in this medium. The glass is of exceptional quality and was painted in the city. It reflects the personal, religious and political interests in Norwich's urban elite, who were worshipping in the leading parish church of one of England's largest cities." "This illustrated volume reconstructs the glazing of much of the eastern arm of the church using extensive documentary and antiquarian evidence. The windows provide opportunities for the discussion of narrative, display and audience, and the glass is set in a local and national stylistic context. There is biographical information relating to all known Norwich glaziers from 1400 to the Reformation; this will constitute a invaluable resource for stained glass studies in the future. The reader will also find details of the documentary evidence for the furnishing and liturgy of St Peter Mancroft; transcripts of all the documents relating to the church's medieval glazing; and descriptions of panels from Mancroft now in other collections."--BOOK JACKET.

In this volume leading international scholars elaborate upon the central issues of the analysis of ideology: the nature of dominant ideologies.
