Since 1660 when actresses first began performing on the English stage, women have forged bright careers in theatre, while men called the shots. Four hundred years of women playwrights, from Aphra Behn to Caryl Churchill, yet plays by women make up less than a quarter of staged productions in the UK, leading to a lack of central roles for women. At a time when many theatres have closed their doors and others are looking to re-open, will they choose to move with the times or fall back on the safety of a tired repertoire? With an overview of influential women in post-war theatre and 25 exclusive interviews with leading women theatre-makers, this book inspires us to create a truly equal and inclusive theatre today. Interviews with: Denise Gough; Vicky Ireland; Jude Kelly; Bryony Lavery; Katie Mitchell; Marsha Norman; Lynn Nottage; Winsome Pinnock; Emma Rice; Daryl Roth and many more.

'The theatre stars' voice guru' Daily Mail Every time you deliver a speech, give a presentation, or simply tell a good story, you are taking centre stage. Here, one of the world’s leading voice coaches introduces the simple exercises that great actors use to hold people’s attention – and reveals how anyone speaking in public can use them. Drawing on 25 years working at the National Theatre in London, Jeannette Nelson explains: How to warm up your voice and body before a big speech. How learning to breathe deeply can improve your clarity and pace. How to divide a script into individual ‘thoughts’ so it flows more naturally. How to adapt your delivery to suit any environment, be it a 1,000-seater auditorium or an intimate Zoom meeting. Along the way, she recounts stories from leading actors that pull back the curtain on how they learnt to own the room, and how you can too. If all the world’s a stage, this book will turn you into its lead actor.

The Actor as Storyteller is intended for serious beginning actors. It opens with an overview, explaining the differences between theater and its hybrid mediums, the part an actor plays in each of those mediums. It moves on to the acting craft itself, with a special emphasis on analysis and choice-making, introducing the concept of the actor as storyteller, then presents the specific tools an actor works with. Next, it details the process an actor can use to prepare for scene work and rehearsals, complete with a working plan for using the tools discussed. The book concludes with a discussion of mental preparation, suggestions for auditioning, a process for rehearsing a play, and an overview of the realities of show business. Included in this updated edition are: • A detailed examination of script analysis of the overall play and of individual scenes • A sample of an actor's script, filled with useful script notations • Two new short plays, one written especially for this text • Updated references, lists of plays, and recommended further reading
