Of Wings and Dirt

Of Wings and Dirt is one woman's story in poetry, which chronicles her journey through mental and physical illness, infertility and miraculous motherhood, and the wonder and faith that sustained her through it all. In Of Wings and Dirt, Kimberly Phinney intimately and unflinchingly reveals the story of her near death experiences and survival with the hopes of comforting her readers and pointing them toward the divine--be it in ordinary moments, the natural world, or the nearness of a loving God. We are all made of wings and dirt, and the lines within are a reminder of this holy truth.

Wizardcraft is dead. It is a part of the ancient past of the realm known as the Three Baronies. However, that is about to change. A young storyteller of a mountainous land in the north travels into the heart of the baronies to make something of himself. The storyteller finds himself in a tale of his own, one enveloped in adventure, danger, duty and love. At the heart of his tale glares the rebirth of Wizardcraft into the Three Baronies. As the only living wizard left in the realm, our storyteller finds himself up against impossible odds. There are numerous things in the Three Baronies that would put the fledgling Wizard's life in danger from mythic beasts and barbaric tribes, to a murderous shape-shifting monster and an ancient prophetic order bent on the Wizard's destruction. This is a story of destiny and the return of magic. This is the story of The Azure Wizard.

Poetry, including a chapter of blessings and prayers, a section of small, haiku-inspired poems, and an homage to Pulitzer Prize-winner poet Mary Oliver. The sound / of a bell / still reverberating. Or a blackbird / calling / from a corner / of a / field. Asking you / to wake / into this life / or inviting you / deeper / to one that waits. Either way / takes courage, / either way wants you / to be nothing / but that self that / is no self at all.

By any measure, Gary Snyder is one of the greatest poets in America in the last century. From his first book of poems to his latest collection of essays, his work and his example, standing between Tu Fu and Thoreau, have been influential all over the world. Riprap, his first book of poems, was published in Japan in 1959 by Origin Press, and it is the fiftieth anniversary of that groundbreaking book we celebrate with this edition. A small press reprint of that book included Snyder's translations of Han Shan's Cold Mountain Poems, perhaps the finest translations of that remarkable poet ever made into English. Reintroducing one of the twentieth century's foremost collections of poetry, this edition will please those already familiar with this work and excite a new generation of readers with its profound simplicity and spare elegance.

This collection of poetry was written during dark times of my life as a form of self-medication for anxiety and depression. While I was deployed in the Middle East as a soldier in the U.S. Army these ailments overwhelmed me with such savagery that I was overcome and consumed by them. Being able to treat myself with writing and creativity kept me sane and functional when all else seemed to be spiraling out of control.
