Twenty-three leading scholars interact in this volume with Luke-Acts. They study a variety of themes and pericopes. From Luke’s view of money and property, the relationship of tamid and eucharist, to the reception of Luke-Acts in Cyprian’s work, it brings new insights to the fore. The essays on individual passages interact with the Jewish and pagan contexts of the work and approach their topics through several different methodological approaches. In this work, Arie W. Zwiep examines the gospel stories of the raising of Jairus's daughter and the healing of the haemorrhaging woman (Mark 5:21-43; Matt 9:18-26; Luke 8:40-56) from a plurality of (sometimes conflicting) interpretive strategies to demonstrate the need and fruitfulness of a multi-perspectival exegetical approach. Among the various (diachronic and synchronic) methods that are being applied in this study are philological criticism, form criticism and structural analysis, tradition- and redaction criticism, orality studies and performance criticism, narrative analysis, textual criticism and the study of intertextuality. Such a comprehensive approach, it is argued, leads to an increased knowledge and a deepened understanding of the ancient texts in question and to a sharpened awareness of the applicability of current scholarly research instruments to unlock documents from the past.
Covenant: A Vital Element of Reformed Theology provides a multi-disciplinary reflection on the theme of the covenant, from historical, biblical-theological and systematic-theological perspectives. The interaction between exegesis and dogmatics in the volume reveals the potential and relevance of this biblical motif. Green draws together studies on Luke's theology over a thirty-year period - from the early days when many scholars questioned whether one might refer to Luke as a "theologian," to contemporary studies pursuing a variety of approaches to discerning Luke's message. These essays contribute to our understanding of the theological and narrative unity of Luke-Acts by pursuing a variety of topics (e.g., salvation, wealth and poverty, baptism, resurrection, and conversion) and more focused examinations of selected Lukan texts, such as the birth narrative, Jesus's crucifixion, Jesus's ascension, the Pentecost episode, and the stories of Cornelius and Lydia.
