Este volumen trata de un estudio general sobre las leyes humanas, que sirven de introducción a los dos libros siguientes, en los que se aborda ya específicamente las peculiaridades de la ley civil y de la ley canónica. En esta edición crítica se ha procedido a la fijación del texto latino, teniendo en cuenta la edición príncipe de Coímbra de 1612 y la edición de Lyon de 1613, publicada en vida de Suárez. Se han hecho un estudio de las fuentes con la verificación de las citas, y la traducción al castellano. El equipo de investigación que se ha ocupado de la edición de la obra ha trabajado bajo la supervisión de Jesús María García Añoveros como director del Comité Editorial del Corpus Hispanorum de Pace
