Vitamin A deficiency affects some 127 million preschool children globally, putting them at increased risk of sickness and death. But supplementation is cost-effective and has proven potential to reduce the yearly number of preventable child deaths. This report tracks the progress of supplementation programming following 10 years of global advocacy. It is a 'scorecard' for countries and the international community on progress in scaling up one of the most effective child survival interventions available - a prerequisite for achieving MDG 4.

This report offers a rationale for urgently scaling up effective interventions to reduce the global burden of child and maternal undernutrition. It provides information on nutrition strategies and progress made by programmes, based on the most recent data available. The success stories and lessons leaned that are described in the publication demonstrate that reducing undernutrition is entirely feasible. The report presents detailed, up-to-date information on nutritional status, programme implementation and related indicators for the 24 countries where 80 per cent of the world’s stunted children live. While this report is a call to action for these 24 high-burden countries, it also highlights the need for accelerated efforts to reduce undernutrition in all countries.

UNICEF/WHO Low Birthweight Estimates

Reducing low birthweight has long been recognized as a global priority; yet today, no region in the world is on course to meet the 2025 World Health Assembly target to reduce the prevalence of low birthweight by 30 per cent. Further, the limited availability and varying quality of low birthweight data have made it challenging to track progress. The UNICEF-WHO Low Birthweight Estimates respond to this challenge by using model approaches to derive estimates, with the goal of improving data comparability across countries and years, and filling data gaps. In 2023, the low birthweight estimates were developed jointly alongside preterm birth estimates for the first time. Throughout the estimation process, technical support was provided by the Estimates Consultative Group, an advisory group comprised of global experts in preterm birth and low birthweight measurement, including obstetricians, neonatologists, statisticians, preterm birth researchers and programme staff.

The Oxford Handbook of the Social Science of Poverty

Despite remarkable economic advances in many societies during the latter half of the twentieth century, poverty remains a global issue of enduring concern. Poverty is present in some form in every society in the world, and has serious implications for everything from health and well-being to identity and behavior. Nevertheless, the study of poverty has remained disconnected across disciplines. The Oxford Handbook of the Social Science of Poverty builds a common scholarly ground in the study of poverty by bringing together an international, inter-disciplinary group of scholars to provide their perspectives on the issue. Contributors engage in discussions about the leading theories and concept...

WHO antenatal care recommendations for a positive pregnancy experience. Nutritional interventions update

The World Health Organization’s comprehensive antenatal care (ANC) guideline WHO recommendations on antenatal care for a positive pregnancy experience was published in 2016 with the objective of improving the quality of routine health care that all women and adolescent girls receive during pregnancy. The overarching principle – to provide pregnant service users with a positive pregnancy experience – aims to encourage countries to expand their health-care agendas beyond survival, with a view to maximizing health, human rights and the potential of their populations. Recognizing that ANC provides a strategic platform for important health-care functions, including health promotion and disease prevention, 14 out of the 49 recommendations in the WHO 2016 ANC guideline relate to nutrition in pregnancy. This living guideline updates the recommendation on zinc supplements during pregnancy.

Shared Responsibility

Global power structures are changing. The United States and Europe are losing ground, as countries such as China and India increase their global reach. At the same time that new global players emerge, multinational corporations, global civil society organizations, and international media carve out their own spaces in international affairs. How will these changes impact the legitimacy of the United Nations? In Shared Responsibility, Carsten Staur examines the ability of the UN to combine its normative functions - defining global objectives, rules, and standards - with practical assistance for its 193 member states. Staur focuses on transformative global challenges, where the UN has the potent...
