This collection of writings has its origins in the VI Rhythm Changes Conference "Jazz Journeys," which took place in Graz (Austria) and where the International Society for Jazz Research celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Eine Instrumentaldidaktik, die künstlerisch gedacht wird, öffnet sich in ihren unterrichtlichen Verläufen für Zonen und Räume, in denen das Künstlerische der Musik erscheinen kann und zu fortgesetztem Üben und Musizieren motiviert. Phänomenologische Betrachtungen zur Musik, die prinzipiell gestischen Wesens ist, improvisatorischem Handeln entspringt oder in ihrer spezifischen Klanglichkeit die Aufmerksamkeit auf besondere Weise fordert, können eine auf das Künstlerische angelegte Didaktik grundieren und begleiten. In weiterer Perspektive ist eine solche Didaktik nicht nur fachlich bzw. disziplinär zu verorten, sondern auch auf ihren Weltbezug und ihre gesellschaftliche Relevanz hin ebenso zu befragen wie hinsichtlich ihrer Bedeutung für individuelle Lernbiografien.
