An anthology of 50 stories about Vancouver and environs in the early years of the 20th century. These stories grew out of a collection of picture postcards -- not just any old postcards, but particularly appealing 'real photo' cards that seemed to be waiting to have their stories told. While some of the images are not uncommon, most of the pictures are rare, if not one-of-a-kind survivors of the 'golden age' of postcards, which encompassed the years between 1900 and 1914, the relatively short period of time when Vancouver ended its days as a frontier town and became a significant Canadian city.

Vanishing British Columbia

The collection represents a rich array of interdisciplinary expertise, with authors who are law professors, historians, sociologists and criminologists. Their essays include studies into the lives of judges and lawyers, rape victims, prostitutes, religious sect leaders, and common criminals. Inuit Art
Inuit--sometimes referred to as Eskimo--art is the primary art form of Canada and has a large international following, particularly in the United States, Japan, and Germany. Despite its popularity, the complete history of Inuit art has never been presented. This is the first chronological synthesis of Inuit art, following its development from prehistory, through early American and European exploration, to the recognition of Inuit art as a commercial possibility, and up to the present. There is a particular emphasis on contemporary art and artists, and the years 1950 through 1997 are each given separate, detailed treatment in regard to important shows and events.
