Volume 16 of Advances in Microbial Ecology has a difficult history. Nearly halfway through its completion, Gwynfryn Jones had to resign as managing edi tor for health reasons, and he asked me to take over. I want to thank Gwyn for his dedicated work in this publication series, and wish him all the best for the future. After the change in editorship, some authors had to be encouraged on rather short notice to provide their chapters in order to make appearance of this volume possible within a reasonable period of time. Sustainable Increase of Marine Harvesting: Fundamental Mechanisms and New Concepts
"How can we increase the production and harvest of living marine resources in the new millennium? Bridging potentials and environmental constraints". This was the theme of the 1st Maricult Conference arranged in Trondheim, Norway in June 2000 in connection with termination of the Norwegian research programme Maricult (1996-2000; www.maricult.org). The intention for the conference was not only to present a state of the art overview of the research conducted as part of the programme, but also to describe other experiences and to discuss the ideas and the scientific status of the programme with the international scientific community. A total of 50 oral communications and 8 posters were presented at the conference. Sixteen of them are included in the present volume. They deal with such topics as strategies for improving marine harvest, underlying mechanisms for marine productivity, new concepts of mariculture with emphasize on mussels, and nutrient supply and environmental impact.
Emerging Issues in Fish Larvae Research
This book deals with the fundamentals of key physiological mechanisms involved in the development and growth of fish larvae. Chapters included show how the environmental and nutritional conditions are affecting the developmental process from its molecular basis and how these same conditions also influence the final characteristics of late larvae and fry. This volume provides recent findings on the importance of environmental rhythms, some specific nutrients and the adequate microbial environment in the developmental processes including recent results of current research projects.
Ecosystem Barents Sea
This book describes the marine ecosystem of the Barents Sea, located north of Norway and Russia as part of the Arctic Ocean. Basic knowledge is presented about components of the ecosystem from virus and bacteria via plankton and fish to seabirds through to marine mammals and their interactions with the physical environment. Ecosystem dynamics are given a prominent role in the book. Mathematical models of the plankton and important fish stocks are employed to help elucidate the interplay between populations and trophic levels. The situation regarding contaminants is reviewed, as is the newly established Norwegian plan for the management of the Barents Sea. The impact of global warming is also discussed. Ecosystem Barents Sea is written for all those with an interest in marine ecology in the arctic seas, including research institutes, governmental ecosystem management units, and natural resources organizations.
Rotifer Symposium VI
As in previous symposia, some current research topics were selected for review and eight invited papers were presented. For the first time a paper was presented on the historical aspects of Rotiferology, covering European research between 1680-1950. A special workshop session was devoted to a debate on a controversial topic: Rotifer Phylogeny. The workshop resulted in a very successful discussion and the integration of scattered evidence and hypotheses on the phylogenetic origin of rotifers, the relationships between major rotifer groups, and the mechanisms of evolution.
Microbial Communities in Aquaculture Ecosystems
This book sheds light on the major functions of microbial communities in aquaculture ecosystems, showing that by recycling nutrients, degrading organic matter and preventing disease outbreaks, a variety of microbes are truly beneficial to a wide range of aquaculture industries. Rotifer Symposium V
The Fifth International Rotifer Symposium was organized by Dr. Claudia Ricci and held in the northern Italian town of Gargnano (Brescia) from September 12-17, 1988. Through the generosity of the Rector of Milano University, a beautiful villa on the shores of Lake Garda was made available to the 83 people from 20 countries who attended the symposium.
