The Design and Implementation of ConcurrentSmalltalk
This book focuses on object-oriented concurrent computing, which can be considered a model of concurrent programming, and proposes a new programming language, ConcurrentSmalltalk, which is based on object-oriented concurrent computing. The book also shows the efficiency of object-oriented concurrent computing through the design, implementation, and evaluation of ConcurrentSmalltalk. ConcurrentSmalltalk is designed to be upwardly compatible with Smalltalk-80. In the book, the ConcurrentSmalltalk object model is first proposed. Next, issues which arise from maintaining compatibility with Smalltalk-80 are discussed. Finally, the ConcurrentSmalltalk virtual machine which executes the ConcurrentSmalltalk programs is proposed.

ETAPS 2001 was the fourth instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprised ve conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), ten satellite workshops (CMCS, ETI Day, JOSES, LDTA, MMAABS, PFM, RelMiS, UNIGRA, WADT, WTUML), seven invited lectures, a debate, and ten tutorials. It seems to capture the situation quite well, only that the object orientation is being materialised in languages and language constructs, as well as in the style of programming and as a perspective upon the task considered. The second European Conference on Object Oriented Programming (ECOOP’88) was held in Oslo, Norway, August 15-17, 1988, in the city where object oriented programming was born more than 20 years ago, when the Simula language appeared. The objectives of ECOOP’88 were to present the best international work in the field of object oriented programming to interested participants from industry and academia, and to be a forum for the exchange of ideas and the growth of professional relationships.
ECOOP 2000 - Object-Oriented Programming
Following a 13-year tradition of excellence, the 14th ECOOP conference repeated the success of its predecessors. This excellence is certainly due to the level of maturity that object-oriented technology has reached, which warrants its use as a key paradigm in any computerized system. Firmly established as a leading forum in the object-oriented arena, ECOOP 2000 received 109 high quality submissions. After a thorough review process, the program committee selected 20 papers, which well re?ect relevant trends in object-oriented research: object modeling, type theory, distribution and coo- ration, advanced tools, programming languages. The program committee, c- sisting of 31 distinguished researchers in object-orientation, met in Milan, Italy, to select the papers for inclusion in the technical program of the conference.
