Photonics

Deals with the fundamental properties of photon and light beams, both experimentally and theoretically. It covers the essentials of linear interactions and most of the nonlinear interactions between light and matter in both the transparent and absorbing cases. About 4000 references open access to original literature.

Non-Linear Raman Spectroscopy and Its Chemical Aplications

In recent years a number of non-linear Raman spectroscopic techniques have been substantially developed and are now proving to be powerful methods for the solution of many problems not only in spectroscopy but also in chemistry, physics and biology. These techniques include hyper Rayleigh and hyper Raman spectroscopy, coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS), Raman Gain and In verse Raman Spectroscopy, Photoacoustic Raman Spectroscopy (PARS) and the Raman Induced Kerr Effect (RIKE). Hyper Raman spectro scopy although experimentally difficult is valuable for investi gating transitions which are not active in the infrared or in the linear Raman effect; and the other non-linear Raman effects can provide signal strength and resolution which are orders of magni tude higher than those obtainable with linear Raman spectroscopy. The thirty chapters in this book will form the basis of lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute in Bad Windsheim, F. R. Germany from August 23 - September 3, 1982.

Light Scattering in Solids 1

This book is devoted to the problem of inelastic light scattering in semiconductors, i.e., to processes in which a photon impinges upon a serniconductor, creating or anihilating one or several quasi-particles, and then emerges with an energy somewhat different from that of the incident photon. In light scattering spectroscopy the incident photons are monochromatic; one measures the energy distribution of the scat tered photons with a spectrometer. Because of its monochromaticity, power, and collimation, lasers are ideal sources for light scattering spectroscopy. Consequently, developments in the field of light scattering have followed, in recent years, the developments in laser technology. T...

Encounters In Nonlinear Optics - Selected Papers Of Nicolaas Bloembergen (With Commentary)

This selection of papers in the field of nonlinear optics contains reprints of original research, and general reviews written since 1960 up to the present. Brief comments by the author place each paper in a historical context of the evolution of nonlinear optics. Papers are selected from a more comprehensive bibliography either on the basis of their influence on subsequent developments or because they were originally published in journals or conference proceedings which are less easily accessible.

The Tunable Lasers and Applications Conference was held in Loen, Norway, on June 6-11, 1976. This conference dealt with the technology of tunable lasers from the vacuum ultraviolet to the far infrared and their application in the areas of photochemistry, chemical kinetics, isotope separation, at mospheric photochemistry and environmental studies, photobiology, and spec troscopy. The need for such a conference grew out of the rapidly expanding use of tunable lasers in a broad range of disciplines. The conference was attended by 130 scientists representing Japan, Italy, West Germany, Canada, Israel, France, England, Norway, Sweden, Brazil, Den mark, Finland, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, ...

Essays in Structural Chemistry

This book deals with selected aspects of structural chemistry, concentrating particularly on molecular and Raman spectroscopy. The authors of the various chapters were chosen from friends, colleagues and past students of Len Woodward. It is our hope that the book will prove useful both to honours students and to research workers. We would like to thank all our contributors for their willing cooperation in this endeavour. We are also grateful to all those who have given permission for the reproduction of copyright material from other publica tions; specific acknowledgments are made in each chapter. We are par ticularly indebted to the Principal and Fellows of Jesus College, Oxford, and the artist, H. A. Freeth, R.A., for permission to reproduce the portrait of Len Woodward which forms the frontispiece. Our thanks are also due to Mrs. J. Stevenson, who undertook a great deal of the secretarial work associated with the organization of this volume, and to Mr. P. Espe who photographed the portrait. The royalties from the sale of this book will, in the first instance, go to Jesus College, Oxford, and will be used for the establishment of a prize to be associated with Len Woodward's name.
