Mixing narrative and images, this book provides a stark account of the collapse of the textile industry in Ahmedabad. Over a four-year period, the author, accompanied by photographer Parthiv Shah, found out what had happened to their previous informants. Hindus and Muslims alike remembered a shared past of working in the same mills and living in the same neighborhoods. Then, following the 2002 riots, the community suffered its final fractures of religious hate. The stories and images here form a unique record of the social consequences of mass pauperization, a record that pays special attention to the coping mechanisms of women in preserving the basic fabric of family.
This book addresses how sexual practices and identities are imagined and regulated through development discourses and within institutions of global governance. The underlying premise of this volume is that the global development industry plays a central role in constructing people’s sexual lives, access to citizenship, and struggles for livelihood. Despite the industry’s persistent insistence on viewing sexuality as basically outside the realm of economic modernization and anti-poverty programs, this volume brings to the fore heterosexual bias within macroeconomic and human rights development frameworks. This book is a compilation of articles, editorial, investigative reports, surveys, memoranda and other significant material on the Gujarat carnage. The final report of the Human Rights Commission (that took a direct interest for the first time, of its own accord, in communal violence) is included in it. Useful material and information will be found in it by future researchers, academics and lay readers. As the specific event of the grim year are blurred and glossed over by other issues and by time, it is important to have such a compilation that preserves the lessons learnt in one of the most horrifying and ominous periods in India s modern history.

Global Indian Diasporas discusses the relationship between South Asian emigrants and their homeland, the reproduction of Indian culture abroad, and the role of the Indian state in reconnecting emigrants to India. Focusing on the limits of the diaspora concept, rather than its possibilities, this volume presents new historical and anthropological research on South Asian emigrants worldwide. From a comparative perspective, examples of South Asian emigrants in Suriname, Mauritius, East Africa, Canada, and the United Kingdom are deployed in order to show that in each of these regions there are South Asian emigrants who do not fit into the Indian diaspora concept—raising questions about the effectiveness of the diaspora as an academic and sociological index, and presenting new and controversial insights in diaspora issues.
