Distinguished Figures in Mechanical Engineering in Spain and Ibero-America

This volume collects contributions on leading figures in mechanism and machine science (MMS) from Spain and Ibero-America over the last two centuries. The contributions examine scientists whose work resulted in relevant technical-scientific achievements, with an impact on technology and science in the historical evolution of MMS fields, and with an influence on the development of society at large. Biographical notes describing the efforts and achievements of these persons are included as well, but a technical survey is the core of each chapter, offering a modern interpretation of their legacy.

In Masculinity and Queer Desire in Spanish Enlightenment Literature, Mehl Allan Penrose examines three distinct male figures, each of which was represented as the Other in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Spanish literature. The most common configuration of non-normative men was the petimetre, an effeminate, Francophile male who figured a failed masculinity, a dubious sexuality, and an invasive French cultural presence. Also inscribed within cultural discourse were the bujarrón or ’sodomite,’ who participates in sexual relations with men, and the Arcadian shepherd, who expresses his desire for other males and who takes on agency as the voice of homoerotica. Developments in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Volume 3 presents papers on the proceedings of the Third Southeastern Conference on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics held in Columbia, S. Carolina on March 31-April 1, 1966. The book covers papers in the areas of continuum mechanics, elasticity, plates and shells, applied mechanics, experimental mechanics, wave propagation, dynamics, vibrations, and fluid mechanics. Physical chemists and mechanical engineers will find the book invaluable.

Conformal Mapping

Beginning with a brief survey of some basic mathematical concepts, this graduate-level text proceeds to discussions of a selection of mapping functions, numerical methods and mathematical models, nonplanar fields and nonuniform media, static fields in electricity and magnetism, and transmission lines and waveguides. Other topics include vibrating membranes and acoustics, transverse vibrations and buckling of plates, stresses and strains in an elastic medium, steady state heat conduction in doubly connected regions, transient heat transfer in isotropic and anisotropic media, and fluid flow. Revision of 1991 ed. 247 figures. 38 tables. Appendices.

Incomplete Conquests

In Incomplete Conquests, Stephanie Joy Mawson uncovers the limitations of Spanish empire in the Philippines, unearthing histories of resistance, flight, evasion, conflict, and warfare from across the breadth of the Philippine archipelago during the seventeenth century. The Spanish colonization of the Philippines that began in 1565 has long been seen as heralding a new era of globalization, drawing together a multiethnic world of merchants, soldiers, sailors, and missionaries. Colonists sent reports back to Madrid boasting of the extraordinary number of souls converted to Christianity and the number of people paying tribute to the Spanish Crown. Such claims constructed an imagined imperial sovereignty and were not accompanied by effective consolidation of colonial control in many of the regions where conversion and tribute collection were imposed. Incomplete Conquests foregrounds the experiences of indigenous, Chinese, and Moro communities and their responses to colonial agents, weaving together stories that take into account the rich cultural and environmental diversity of this island world.
