Mental Lexicon

This book is about the mental lexicon and opens an understanding of this aspect of human cognition. The mental lexicon is still a central topic in psycholinguistics and, more generally speaking, in cognitive science. Is it possible to define what is intended by the expression "mental lexicon", a concept coined by Oldfield as early as 1966? Are the terms that the authors have at their disposal still sufficient to discuss this hypothesised mental entity -- the mental lexicon -- which is intended to cover many different aspects of words? The authors propose as a working definition that the mental lexicon corresponds to the mental repository of all representations that are intrinsically related to words. This book extends its research in psycholinguistics and focuses on the word.

50 years after the perceptron, 25 years after PDP: Neural computation in language sciences

This Research Topic aims to showcase the state of the art in language research while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the tremendously influential work of the PDP group, and the 50th anniversary of the perceptron. Although PDP models are often the gold standard to which new models are compared, the scope of this Research Topic is not constrained to connectionist models. Instead, we aimed to create a landmark forum in which experts in the field define the state of the art and future directions of the psychological processes underlying language learning and use, broadly defined. We thus called for papers involving computational modeling and original research as well as technical, philosophical, or historical discussions pertaining to models of cognition. We especially encouraged submissions aimed at contrasting different computational frameworks, and their relationship to imaging and behavioral data.

Modular Synthesis: Patching Machines and People brings together scholars, artists, composers, and musical instrument designers in an exploration of modular synthesis, an unusually multifaceted musical instrument that opens up many avenues for exploration and insight, particularly with respect to technological use, practice, and resistance. Through historical, technical, social, aesthetic, and other perspectives, this volume offers a collective reflection on the powerful connections between technology, creativity, culture, and personal agency. Ultimately, this collection is about creativity in a technoscientific world and speaks to issues fundamental to our everyday lives and experiences, by ...

Eight generations of Bonins born in the United States, beginning with the family of Antoine Bonin (b. 1715) and Marie Marguerite Tellier (1726-1800). Antoine was a rifleman in the French Army of occupation of the Louisiana Territory; he married Marie in October 1740 while stationed at Fort Toulouse, Mobile, Alabama. Following his discharge in 1763, he and his family relocated in French territory west of the Mississippi River, settling finally in present-day St. Martinville, Louisiana. This Bonin family is distinguished from the other Bonin families from France, Belgium, Poland, Germany, or Italy by the term Bonin Martinet.

Broussard

As early as 1765, Acadians began to settle near St. Martinville in the center of an area known as Côte Gelée, or "Frozen Hill," due to seasonal cold temperatures that covered the Mississippi River with ice. These early settlers were exiles from Acadie (now Nova Scotia, Canada). They established farms that, in the early 1800s, became interspersed among expanding sugar plantations. With a motto of "Where our rich culture defines us," Broussard is one of the fastest growing cities in Louisiana today. Embracing its past has made way for Broussard's competitive spirit that positions its leaders in not only the state, but also the world. The Billeaud Sugar Mill, which supported the community for many years, has now diversified into land acquisitions. The St. Julien families, identified for many generations with agricultural, professional, and political interests, have long-standing ties to the community, as do sports figures such as National League umpire Greg Bonin and two Blanchard siblings who competed in the Junior Olympics.

Contemporary Tools and Techniques for Studying Writing

This book brings together methods designed by psychologists, linguists, and practitioners who aim to study writing both within the laboratory and the workplace. Its primary focus is upon the computer-based techniques and methods available today that enable and foster new systematic investigations of writing theories and processes. It is of interest to writing professionals, teachers of writing, as well as those, like journalists, whose careers depend on managing multiple constraints and audiences for their work.
