Le gaélique fut pendant de nombreuses années la langue majoritaire en Écosse, au moins dans les Hautes-Terres. La colonisation progressive de l'Écosse par les Anglais provoqua son déclin. Le parlement écossais s'est engagé depuis 2005 dans diverses actions en faveur du gaélique (scolarité, médias, publications diverses etc.). Une part importante du livre est également consacrée au gaélique de l'île de Man, langue peu prestigieuse du groupe celtique mais dont l'histoire est passionnante à bien des égards.
