No More Damned Secrets

After his mother's death, Paul Cornes discovered that the man who had brought him up was not his biological father. Unravelling the web of lies constructed by his mother with the collusion of her family, Paul discovered that he was a 'war child', the son of a Canadian veteran. He used public sources to trace his father and his North American roots back several generations. Although his father had died, Paul discovered that he had a half-sister and an extended family, into which he has been welcomed with open arms. This is his account of his journey of discovery.

Open Prisons

Originally published in 1977, Open Prisons presents research carried out in a number of prisons in the UK both ‘open’ and ‘closed’ intended to compare their effectiveness. Information was collected from inmates and prison staff through a number of exercises designed to assess the social atmosphere of the prison and how they felt about it. The book finishes with a chapter which discusses the policy implications of their findings. Today it can be read in its historical context.

The Future of Work for People with Disabilities

The monograph examines reasons for declining placement of people with disabilities reported since 1970 by vocational rehabilitation programs. It begins by briefly noting the changing face of industrial society and suggests the need to reexamine traditional concepts of work as paid employment. The effects of new technologies are traced, along with changes in the distribution of occupations, changes in working conditions and the organization of work, changes in attitudes toward work and the meaning of work. The origins and evolution of British vocational rehabilitation are noted, and trends revealing the accumulation of a large pool of long-term unemployed disabled people are cited. The final section addresses the future of the British vocational rehabilitation system, noting the need for improvement in four areas: assessment and intervention methods appropriate to a post-industrial society, increased services to underserved portions of the disabled population (e.g. disabled women, disabled people in rural areas), increased attention to the social and economic context in which services are provided, and use of more sophisticated planning and decision making aids. Fast Facts: Biosimilars

Biosimilars have been in clinical use for more than 10 years, and evidence from more than 700 million patient-days’ exposure shows that approved biosimilars can be used as safely and effectively as their originator biologics. And yet concerns about these drugs persist, particularly in therapy areas where they are recent additions to the formulary. It is vital to address these concerns so that clinicians can prescribe biosimilars with confidence, realizing substantial cost savings and improving patient access to effective treatments. 'Fast Facts: Biosimilars' provides a comprehensive yet concise explanation of biosimilars: what they are, how they are regulated, and how they are used in clin...

Fast Facts: Biosimilars in Hematology and Oncology

Biologics have revolutionized – and are revolutionizing – the treatment of many serious disorders. The evidence acquired from more than 10 years of clinical experience, with more than 50 biosimilar drugs and more than 700 million patient-days' exposure in Europe, shows that approved biosimilars can be used as safely and effectively as originator biologics. Yet concerns persist about biosimilars – particularly in curative cancer treatment, where they are relatively recent therapeutic options. 'Fast Facts: Biosimilars in Hematology and Oncology' provides a concise overview of emerging global practice in this fast-moving area together with practical information on adding biosimilars to a formulary and switching patients. Contents: • Biologics and the need for biosimilars • Why do we need biosimilars? • How is the quality of biosimilar medicines assured? • Legal issues • Switching, interchangeability and extrapolation • Safety and pharmacovigilant • Global issues • Formulary considerations: pharmacy issues • Formulary considerations: supportive care biosimilars • Formulary considerations: therapeutic anti-cancer biosimilars • Communication and awareness
