Two Lovely Short Novels by Paul Richards

Award-winning, critically acclaimed comedy writer Paul Richards proudly presents his two short novels in one lovely volume... A BAND AT SEA "Before you say you're going to leave this band, before you say that playing covers is musical prostitution, before you say that every creative cell in your body has been destroyed by our 80s medley of Bros and A-Ha songs, before you say you hate our choice of tunes so much that you're tempted to not listen to another piece of music ever again, before you say you'd rather be dead than play another 50th birthday party gig...don't forget: this band is all you have." Alex. 41. He's lost his flat, his girlfriend, his parents and his dignity. Still, at least ...

Through the Rain

The news is often replete with horror stories of lost children, especially boys, who it seem are destined for failure by nothing more than the fact that they were born in an inner-city community. Through the Rain takes an open, honest look at an average boy from an average family who, in spite of the odds, makes it out of two such communities and makes a success of his life. The story is much about growing up as it is about family, friendship, and overcoming challenges in spite of the odds. However, it is mostly about hard work, perseverance, and what can happen when ordinary people choose to live lives of decency, courage, and faith. Told in a refreshingly candid and good-natured way, the author hopes his story will inspire those ordinary people whose stories unfortunately go untold.

Labour's Revival

Labour's Revival offers the Labour Party a path to power following a general election when its coalition of support will likely have been fractured and their traditional voters will have deserted them in their tens of thousands. The author analyses Labour's strategic errors and the debilitating bumps in the road - the 10p tax rate row, the disastrous battle over 42-day detention, the plots against Gordon Brown's leadership, poor local and European election results and perceived policy U-turns. Paul Richards outlines the task ahead for Labour. By calling on Labour to adopt a new agenda on public service reform, local ownership and control, a green economy and a renewed democracy, Labour's Revival offers a practical path for modernisers to follow in the tough months ahead. As Labour searches its soul, and debates its future, Labour's Revival provides a wake-up call for anyone who wants to see Labour come back as a serious party of government.

I can only say that I have been privileged to have been just one of those fortunate evacuees during World War Two, while others possibly suffered. I was enjoying the very best of my childhood, and of my life. Paul Richards was six years old when he moved to Cookham with his family to escape the perils of living in London during the war. Although only 30 miles away from the city, down the river Thames, Cookham was a rural idyll that the war barely seemed to touch and where the pace of life was slower. Paul spent his days exploring the countryside, making friends with the local characters and enjoying the country way of life. More than 3.5 million people were evacuated during the Second World War, and not all were relocated to happy homes, but these nostalgic memoirs show one evacuee's recollections of a contented childhood - where people survived through adversity by taking pleasure from the simple things and keeping their strong sense of community spirit.

Private Property and the Goddess

Private Property and the Goddess explores how patriarchal private property arose in ancient times when men seized the land from woman-centered cultures that grew up around the universal circle of women who nurtured humanity's children, giving rise to language and culture. Seizing the land required men to destroy the mother right basic to all Goddess cultures in which the land descended through the female line. The only way to end the mother right was through patriarchal monogamy that ended freedom for women and inaugurated the current era of misogyny, oppression and slavery. The story unfolds through the author's response to American Indian Movement leader Russell Means' assertion that Europ...

My National Service was 1951-1953. A craftsman in the R.E.M.E., and attached to the 2/2nd King Edward VII Own Gurkha Rifles (Sirmoor Rifles), during the Malaysian Emergency. An exciting journal of events, and experiences, during that period. The initial training, the outward adventure to Singapore, on the 'Empress of Australia'. Living with the fearless Gurkhas, their religious Hindu festival of Dussehera, the Gurkha knife, the kukri, their food, their laughter and their friendship. The return to the UK on the 'Empire Windrush', which was bringing back troops, including wounded, back from the Korean War, and finally my time with the County of London Yeomanry, with tanks on the Castlemartin Tank Range, and Salisbury Plain, and even tanks of the German Panzer division, on the streets of South Wales, later on!
