A Companion to Late Medieval and Early Modern Augsburg introduces readers to major political, social and economic developments in Augsburg from c. 1400 to c. 1800 as well as to those themes of social and cultural history that have made research on this imperial city especially fruitful and stimulating. The volume comprises contributions by an international team of 23 scholars, providing a range of the most significant scholarly approaches to Augsburg’s past from a variety of perspectives, disciplines, and methodologies. A Tale of Three Thirsty Cities
In A Tale of Three Thirsty Cities: The Innovative Water Supply Systems of Toledo, London and Paris in the Second Half of the Sixteenth Century, Chaim Shulman presents an analysis of three projects of urban water supply systems carried out between 1560s–1610s. The technical and economic differences between these projects resulted from external conditions not directly related to the water supply problem. Although the same basic technology was apparently available at the time in all cases, the geographical, engineering, entrepreneurial and cultural nature of each region differed. The inhabitants’ wellbeing improvement achieved varied accordingly. Much broader insights are drawn on the policies of the three monarchies regarding the initiative of and support for grand scale public works in general.

Was macht Familie als Instanz aus, in der spezifische Kulturen hervorgebracht und tradiert werden? In einem zeitlichen Rahmen von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart fragen die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes nach sozialen und institutionellen Bedingungen von Familienkulturen und -traditionen, nach ihrer familialen und gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung, nach innerfamiliären Akteuren und Akteurinnen sowie ihren symbolischen Ordnungen. Darüber hinaus werden unterschiedliche Begriffs-, Theorie- und Methodenangebote aus den Sozialwissenschaften, der Geschichtswissenschaft und den Kulturwissenschaften aufgegriffen und hinsichtlich ihres Erkenntniswerts für Familienkulturen und -traditionen diskutiert und weiterentwickelt. Die vielschichtige Herangehensweise erschließt ein neues Forschungsfeld für die erziehungswissenschaftliche Familienforschung.
