Pavel Tichý's Collected Papers in Logic and Philosophy
Pavel Tichy was an original, gifted logician and philosopher of language. He developed what he called Transparent Intensional Logic, a semantic theory within which to analyze both natural and artificial languages. This theory is devoted to the central problem of saying exactly what it is that we learn, know and can communicate when we come to understand what a sentence means. The theory remains one of the most inspiring and controversial doctrines of contemporary philosophical logic, attracting passionate defenders and equally fierce opponents. More than forty papers are collected together in this book to trace the development of Tichy's ideas. They include his earliest papers (hitherto available only in Czech), the papers that informed his important 1998 monograph The Foundations of Frege's Logic, through to the mature doctrines that he was still elaborating at his untimely death in 1994. Also included are several acclaimed polemical pieces in which Tichy criticized the leading, and he thought mistaken, ideas of influential contemporary thinkers.

The concept of likeness to truth, like that of truth itself, is fundamental to a realist conception of inquiry. To demonstrate this we need only make two rather modest aim of an inquiry, as an inquiry, is realist assumptions: the truth doctrine (that the the truth of some matter) and the progress doctrine (that one false theory may realise this aim better than another). Modality and Meaning
Part I of this book presents a theory of modal metaphysics in the possible-worlds tradition. `Worlds' themselves are understood as structured sets of properties; this `Ersatzist' view is defended against its most vigorous competitors, Meinongianism and David Lewis' theory of existent concrete worlds. Related issues of essentialism and linguistic reference are explored. Part II takes up the question of lexical meaning in the context of possible-world semantics. There are skeptical analyses of analyticity and the notion of a logical constant; and an `infinite polysemy' thesis is defended. The book will be of particular interest to metaphysicians, possible-world semanticists, philosophers of language, and linguists concerned with lexical semantics.

This book offers a defense of the tensed theory of time, a critique of the New Theory of Reference, and an argument that simultaneity is absolute.
