Molecular Clouds

The study of molecular clouds has received increasing interest over recent years, particularly in the UK with the advent of powerful new instruments such as MERLIN and the Maxwell millimetre wave telescope. This book is based on the proceedings of the Seventh Manchester International Astronomy Conference which brought together an international list of speakers to discuss important new developments in this field. The book covers a wide range of topics relevant to the general subject of molecular clouds, with review articles and papers from an impressive list of contributors. Much new work in this area is covered, and consequently this book should become an important reference source for workers in this and related fields.

The Place of Probability in Science

Science aims at the discovery of general principles of special kinds that are applicable for the explanation and prediction of the phenomena of the world in the form of theories and laws. When the phenomena themselves happen to be general, the principlesinvolved assume the form of theories; and when they are p- ticular, they assume the form of general laws. Theories themselves are sets of laws and de nitions that apply to a common domain, which makes laws indispensable to science. Understanding science thus depends upon understanding the nature of theories and laws, the logical structure of explanations and predictions based upon them, and the principles of inference and decision that apply ...

Protostars and Planets V

'Protostars and Planets V' builds on the latest results from recent advances in ground and space-based astronomy and in numerical computing techniques to offer the most detailed and up-to-date picture of star and planet formation - including the formation and early evolution of our own solar system.

Invisible Men

Invisible Men is the most comprehensive study to date of the lives and work of English police constables on foot patrol in the early part of the twentieth century. Joanne Klein has plumbed previously unstudied archives of police departments in Manchester, Birmingham, and Liverpool to offer a fascinating insider’s view of the working-class men charged with protecting the citizens of these rapidly growing cities during a period of great change in both the life of the city and the nature of police methods and training. “This is an excellent book. It is well-written and extremely interesting, filling a gap in a historical literature which is dominated by official and institutional perspectives, by illuminating the daily and working lives of constables.”—Lucinda McCray Beier, Appalachian State University

This book contains review articles of most of the topics addressed at the conf- ence on Simulations of Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in astrophysics: recent achievements and perspectives which took place from July 2 to 6, 2001 at the Institut Henri Poincar ́e in Paris. We made the choice to publish these lectures in a tutorial form so that they can be read by a broad audience. As a result, this book does not give an exhaustive view of all the subjects addressed during the conference. The main objective of this workshop which gathered about 90 scientists from di?erent ?elds, was to present and confront recent results on the topic of t- bulence in magnetized astrophysical environments. Nelson Goodman's New Riddle of Induction

A challenger of traditions and boundaries A pivotal figure in 20th-century philosophy, Nelson Goodman has made seminal contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, and the philosophy of language, with surprising connections that cut across traditional boundaries. In the early 1950s, Goodman, Quine, and White published a series of papers that threatened to torpedo fundamental assumptions of traditional philosophy. They advocated repudiating analyticity, necessity, and prior assumptions. Some philosophers, realizing the seismic effects repudiation would cause, argued that philosophy should retain the familiar framework. Others considered the arguments compelling, but despaired of doing philosophy without the framework. Goodman disagreed with both factions. Rather than regretting the loss of structure, he capitalized on the opportunities that arise when the strictures of tradition are loosened.
