Analogia

I think that fr Sophrony’s theology has greatly contributed, in our times, to edify a Christian anthropology, which while respecting the Patristic tradition, at the same time expresses itself in a uniquely personal contemporary way. And even more than that: St Sophrony became himself a living flame of God’s Grace, by realising in himself this analogical consubstantiality described above. (From the Editorial) Contents: 1. The Dialogue of Elder Sophrony with his generation within his biography of Saint Silouan, ARCHIMANDRITE ZACHARIAS, 2. Theology as a Spiritual State in the life and the writings of St Sophrony the Athonite, ARCHIMANDRITE PETER, 3. Godforsakenness according to St Sophrony the Athonite, ARCHIMANDRITE EPHRAIM, 4. St Sophrony’s ‘Testament’: The Trinity as a model for monastic community, HIEROMONK NIKOLAI SAKHAROV, 5. The experience of temporality according to St Sophrony, GEORGIOS I. MANTZARIDIS, 6. Peter the Great

Peter the Great (1672–1725), tsar of Russia for forty-three years, was a dramatic, appealing, and unconventional character. This book provides a vivid sense of the dynamics of his life—both public and private—and his reign. Drawing on his letters and papers, as well as on other contemporary accounts, the book provides new insights into Peter’s complex character, giving information on his actions, deliberations, possessions, and significant fantasy world--his many disguises and pseudonyms, his interest in dwarfs, his clowning and vandalism. It also sheds fresh light on his relationships with individuals such as his second wife Catherine and his favorite, Alexander Menshikov. The book includes discussions of Peter’s image in painting and sculpture, and there are two final chapters on his legacy and posthumous reputation up to the present.

Latin Books and the Eastern Orthodox Clerical Elite in Kiev, 1632-1780

Founded in 1632, the library of the Kiev Mohyla Academy went up in flames in 1780. Encompassing predominantly humanist, scholastic and homiletic titles in Latin yet placed in a heartland of Eastern Orthodox territories, the library was something of an anomaly for its time, offering East Slavic intellectuals a comprehensive introduction to Western printed matter. Those books brought along with them not only a new pattern of knowledge, but also an awareness of the diversity and multiplicity of views which the educated could hold.

Containing Balkan Nationalism

"Containing Balkan Nationalism highlights the efforts by ecclesiastics, publicists, and diplomats in Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Greece, and Bulgaria to develop and implement various plans to reconcile ethnic differences within existing religious and dynastic frameworks. Those arrangements were often inspired by modern visions of a political and cultural union of Orthodox Slavs and Greeks"--

Anti-Tritheist Dossier

The authors provide us with the Syriac text together with a translation of part of the controversy between the patriarchs Peter and Damian from the end of the sixth century, over alleged tritheism with which Peter of Callinicum was charged by his Sobellianizing opponents. With the publication and translation of this dossier we have a window opened on the debates that developed between Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian churchmen and theologians. Illuminating accounts are offered of the life and writings of Peter of Callinicum, the anti-Tritheist dossier, and the Tritheist controversy up to 586 together with a brief summary of the Tritheist Doctrine and then an account of the controversy between Peter and Damian.
