The Holy Roman Empire, 1495-1806: A European Perspective
In the early modern period the Holy Roman Empire, or Reich, was one of the oldest and largest European states. Its importance was magnified by its location at the heart of the continent, by the extensive international connections of its leading families, and by the involvement of foreign rulers in its governance. This book breaks new ground in its collective exploration of aspects of cross-border and transnational interaction, and of political and diplomatic, social and cultural relations. There are essays on important turning-points, especially 1648 and 1806; on the patterns of rulership of the emperors themselves; on areas which lay on the margin of the Reich; on neighbouring countries which interacted with the Empire; and on visual and material culture. Die Habsburgermonarchie und der Dreißigjährige Krieg
Die Habsburgermonarchie bleibt in Überblicksdarstellungen zum Dreißigjährigen Krieg meist eher am Rande der Darstellung – lediglich am Beginn und gegen Ende des Kriegs gerät sie prominenter in den Blick. Der Band gibt einleitend einen Überblick zu den Ereignissen in den verschiedenen Ländern der Monarchie, die von Kriegshandlungen und Kriegsfolgen sehr unterschiedlich betroffen waren. Die Beiträge, denen sich solche zu den Habsburgern als Landesfürsten und Kriegsherren, zu Kriegsfinanzen, verschiedenen Selbstzeugnisse und zur Erinnerungskultur anschließen, machen vor allem eines deutlich: Der Dreißigjährige Krieg hat das Leben der Menschen in der Habsburgermonarchie sehr viel tiefgreifender beeinflusst, als bislang oft vermutet. Neben den direkten Kriegsfolgen machten sich die Einquartierungen, die drückende Steuerlast oder auch die Bauernunruhen in verschiedenen Teilen der Monarchie deutlich bemerkbar.

Verwaltungsgeschichte der Habsburgermonarchie in der Frühen Neuzeit
Der erste Band des umfassenden neuen Handbuchs ist dem Kaiserhof, den Zentralbehörden der Monarchie und dem Verhältnis zwischen dem Kaiser, seinen Erbländern und dem Heiligen Römischen Reich gewidmet. Die Darstellung der Entwicklung des Kriegswesens, des landesfürstlichen Finanzwesens sowie der Kommerzbehörden und des Postwesens erfolgt in eigenen Abschnitten. Weitere Beiträge befassen sich mit der territorialen und demographischen Entwicklung, den dynastischen Erbfolgeregelungen und dem länderspezifischen Thronfolgerecht sowie dem Adel in der Habsburgermonarchie. 60 ausgewiesene Fachleute aus sieben Ländern führen die in unzähligen Publikationen und etwa einem Dutzend Sprachen zerstreut vorliegenden einschlägigen Forschungen zusammen und lassen auch ganz aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse in das Handbuch einfließen.
Making Peace in an Age of War
This English-language translation of Mark Hengerer's Kaiser Ferdinand III: 1608–1657 Eine Biographie is based on an analysis of the weekly reports sent by the papal nuncio’s office to the Vatican. These reports give detailed information about the daily whereabouts of the dynasty, courtiers, and foreign visitors, and they contain the gossip of the court in addition to weekly analysis of some political problems. This material enabled the author to report on daily life of the dynasty and to analyze the circumstances under which policy was made, which has led to a balance between the personality of Ferdinand III and the problems with which he dealt. In this biography, Hengerer provides answers to the question: Why did it take the emperor more than ten years to end a devastating war, the traumatizing effects of which on central Europe lasted into the twentieth century, particularly since there was no hope of victory against his foreign adversaries from the very moment he came into power?

In the intellectual culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, the competitive comparison of Ancients and Moderns and their respective relations to civilization and barbarism constituted one of the formative discourses. Yet alternative ideas of time and historicity are encountered not only in cultural contexts outside of Europe but also in the largely forgotten professional knowledge of the Old World: Thomism, Peripatetism, moderate forms of criticism, political theory, and legal practice. This book introduces a broad panorama of such intellectual cultures in Central Europe. It situates theological, historical, and philosophical scholarship in its institutional and epistemological environments: the Church, the Holy Roman Empire, and the emerging Habsburg Monarchy. In doing so, it identifies struggles over competing pasts – Christian, ethnic, legal – as the core of those domains' intellectual development.
