Emergent Forms

While it is often assumed that behavioral development must be based upon both physical law and the biological principles of morphogenesis and selection, forging a link between these phenomena has remained an elusive goal. Now in Emergent Forms, psychologist Eugene C. Goldfield offers an exciting new theoretical framework--based, in part, on the concept of self-organization--that promises to aid researchers in their quest to discover the underlying origins and processes of behavioral development. Addressing the question of how familiar human functional acts--such as eating, walking, manipulating objects, and smiling--emerge during infancy, Goldfield proposes that during perceptually guided sp...

The Development of Timing Control and Temporal Organization in Coordinated Action

This volume examines the development of timing in coordinated action from several different ontogenetic perspectives. Some chapters emphasize the qualitative changes in manifest motor behavior during the early growth years and examine the relation between temporal characteristics of pre- and perinatal movements and goal directed actions with qualitatively different rules of temporal organization. Other contributors stress the developmentally invariant timing characteristics of species-typical and perhaps genetically programmed motor patterns of nonhuman organisms. Also examined is the molecular machinery that generates circumscribed motor patterns with stable temporal characteristics, as well as the reversible influences of peripheral feedback on and the interactions among discrete pattern generators. Despite their basic theoretical differences, both formulations imply the same generic hypothesis: that the temporal characteristics of manifest movement or action are controlled by central agencies acting on the peripheral skeleto-muscular system in a hierarchic top-down mode.

Wolff's Headache and Other Head Pain

Headaches represent one of the most common medical conditions and one of the most frequent reasons for patients seeking medical care. Wolff's Headache has become a classic in the field of head pain. Providing a compendium of facts, it stands above other texts as one of the most definitive and comprehensive textbooks on diagnosis and management. Wolff's Headache and Other Head Pain 7E provides a comprehensive overview of headache disorders. The contributors are the acknowledged world leaders in their fields. The new edition reflects the enormous growth of knowledge regarding the classification of epidemiology, mechanisms, and treatment of headaches. The book provides both practical clinical advice and a clear overview of the science which provides the foundation for that advice.

Deeply involved in the Holocaust as Heinrich Himmler's deputy for administration, Karl Wolff personally arranged for the transportation of 300,000 Jews from Poland to the Treblinka death camp in 1943. He went to trial in Germany and received a short prison sentence in 1964. But Wolff, even more than Reinhard Heydrich, could claim to enjoy Adolf Hitler's complete confidence. He was appointed SS police chief in northern Italy in 1943-1945 and ordered by the Führer himself to kidnap the Pope and the cardinals and take them to Germany. Wolff managed to talk Hitler out of the wild scheme and escaped hanging at Nuremberg by negotiating the surrender of the German armies in Italy with Allen Dulles in Switzerland.

Starting with a simple formulation accessible to all mathematicians, this second edition is designed to provide a thorough introduction to nonstandard analysis. Nonstandard analysis is now a well-developed, powerful instrument for solving open problems in almost all disciplines of mathematics; it is often used as a ‘secret weapon’ by those who know the technique. This book illuminates the subject with some of the most striking applications in analysis, topology, functional analysis, probability and stochastic analysis, as well as applications in economics and combinatorial number theory. The first chapter is designed to facilitate the beginner in learning this technique by starting with ...
