Nanoscience and Cultural Heritage
This book aims to give state of the art in several domains of cultural heritage in which Nanosciences allow fundamental breakthrough. The first part of the book concerns nanostructured materials in ancient artifacts. Understanding their nature and formation processes bring new insight in the apprehension of technical level of ancient societies but can also inspire the design of new materials. The second part is dedicated to the understanding of materials. This crucial issue in material science today, for cultural heritage, needs to perform specific characterization techniques and technologies, but also to create tailored analytical strategies. Part three presents new methods, processes and materials at nano levels that can bring innovative solutions to conservation and restoration issues, linked with the understanding of the alteration processes involved at different scales.

Evolution of the Pyrenees during the Variscan and Alpine Cycles 1 presents the evolution of geological knowledge of the Pyrenees as a result of major scientific research programs in the early 21st century. This book, dedicated to the Variscan cycle and Cretaceous rifting, traces the evolution of the Pyrenean domain between 340 Ma and 90 Ma. It begins with an analysis of the state of knowledge of the Pyrenean basement, whose structure is inherited from the Variscan evolution of this domain. It then traces the kinematic evolution of the western Mediterranean domain since the Paleozoic. Finally, it discusses the evolution of our knowledge of Cretaceous rifting and the sedimentary and metasomatic processes associated with the individualization of the Iberian–Eurasian plate boundary.

Magma-Rock and Magma-Mush Interactions as Fundamental Processes of Magmatic Differentiation
During transport, a percolating melt or magma may contact rock or a magmatic mush, resulting in inevitable interactions that may be described as magma/melt-rock or magma/melt-mush interactions. Examples of these types of interactions include mantle metasomatism, mineral-melt reaction in the mantle, mineral dissolution in magma, crustal wallrock partial melting, and thermal remobilization of preexisting mushy magma (rejuvenation of mush) by intruding high specific enthalpy magma. This spectrum of processes plays a major role in the composition, thickness, and age of the mantle lithosphere and its associated crust. These interactions also impact the asthenosphere because melts that form in the deepest parts of the mantle may ascend and interact with shallower mantle during transport.
