This special issue of SubStance (2007) celebrates the centennial of Henri Bergson’s Creative Evolution, published in 1907. Since evolution is a living process and not a completed history, any understanding of it must necessarily be open-ended. If no one can have the last word, Bergson writes, the project of understanding evolution “will only be built up by the collective and progressive effort of many thinkers, of many observers also, completing, correcting and improving one another.” Included in the issue are articles from Bergson scholars from the United States, Japan, France and Great Britain. Topics in the issue range from Bergson’s encounters with Darwin, Nietzsche, Derrida and Deleuze, and from the analytical to the metaphysical.
The Christian Mystery
Mysticism has a place in all the major world religions. This book begins with the assertion that Christian Mysticism, in its most essential state, is the mystery of Christ's union with God. Certain major theologians including Albert Ritschl and Karl Barth have stood in opposition to the concept of mysticism and have even suggested that it is opposite to the heart of the Gospel and indeed the whole Bible. Yet Bouyer here makes a strong argument for understanding Mysticism as central to the Christian faith. Maximus the Confessor as a European Philosopher
The study of Maximus the Confessor's thought has flourished in recent years: international conferences, publications and articles, new critical editions and translations mark a torrent of interest in the work and influence of perhaps the most sublime of the Byzantine Church Fathers. It has been repeatedly stated that the Confessor's thought is of eminently philosophical interest. However, no dedicated collective scholarly engagement with Maximus the Confessor as a philosopher has taken place--and this volume attempts to start such a discussion. Apart from Maximus' relevance and importance for philosophy in general, a second question arises: should towering figures of Byzantine philosophy like Maximus the Confessor be included in an overview of the European history of philosophy, or rather excluded from it--as is the case today with most histories of European philosophy? Maximus' philosophy challenges our understanding of what European philosophy is. In this volume, we begin to address these issues and examine numerous aspects of Maximus' philosophy--thereby also stressing the interdisciplinary character of Maximian studies.

For both Maximus the Confessor (c. 580-662) and Jurgen Moltmann (b. 1926), understanding what it means to be human springs from a contemplative vision of God. This comparative study explores surprising parallels between the theological anthropology of the seventh-century Byzantine monk and the contemporary German Protestant. Bingaman argues that Maximus and Moltmann root their understanding of the human calling in their Trinitarian and christological reflection, in contrast to many modern theologies that tend to devise an account of human being first, and then try to find ways in which Christ and the Trinity are somehow relevant to this human being. In this constructive work, Bingaman demonstrates the intrinsic connection between Maximus' and Moltmann's views of human being, Christ and the Trinity, the church, and the human calling in creation.
