Chasing the Past

This book aims to provide an original perspective on the changes that Greece has undergone in recent decades, by examining questions related to border disputes and migration, minority issues and national inclusion, and their effect in reinforcing discourses of glorification of the past and tradition on the fringes of Greek territory.

Written by an eminent authority in the field, Modelling of Mechanical Systems: Fluid-Structure Interaction is the third in a series of four self-contained volumes suitable for practitioners, academics and students alike in engineering, physical sciences and applied mechanics. The series skilfully weaves a theoretical and pragmatic approach to modelling mechanical systems and to analysing the responses of these systems. The study of fluid-structure interactions in this third volume covers the coupled dynamics of solids and fluids, restricted to the case of oscillatory motions about a state of static equilibrium. Physical and mathematical aspects of modelling these mechanisms are described in depth and illustrated by numerous worked out exercises.· Written by a world authority in the field in a clear, concise and accessible style · Comprehensive coverage of mathematical techniques used to perform computer-based analytical studies and numerical simulations · A key reference for mechanical engineers, researchers and graduate students

The modelling of mechanical systems provides engineers and students with the methods to model and understand mechanical systems by using both mathematical and computer-based tools. Written by an eminent authority in the field, this is the second of four volumes which provide engineers with a comprehensive resource on this cornerstone mechanical engineering subject. Dealing with continuous systems, this book covers solid mechanics, beams, plates and shells. In a clear style and with a practical rather than theoretical approach, it shows how to model continuous systems in order to study vibration modes, motion and forces. Appendices give useful primers on aspects of the mathematics introduced in the book. Other volumes in the series cover discrete systems, fluid-structure interaction and flow-induced vibration.*Axisa is a world authority in the modelling of systems*Comprehensive coverage of mathematical techniques used to perform computer-based analytical studies and numerical simulations*A key reference for mechanical engineers, researchers and graduate students in this cornerstone subject

This first volume is concerned with discrete systems – the study of which constitutes the cornerstone of all mechanical systems, linear or non-linear. It covers the formulation of equations of motion and the systematic study of free and forced vibrations. The book goes into detail about subjects such as generalized coordinates and kinematical conditions; Hamilton's principle and Lagrange equations; linear algebra in N-dimensional linear spaces and the orthogonal basis of natural modes of vibration of conservative systems. Also included are the Laplace transform and forced responses of linear dynamical systems, the Fourier transform and spectral analysis of excitation and response determini...

"The Mediterranean in the Age of Globalization is a welcome corrective to the tendency to present globalization as a homogenous concept, and the failure to describe how it operates in specific regions. Ribas-Mateos examines globalization and migration across the Mediterranean, using an innovative, integrated framework so as to map social places by describing how social, political, cultural, and economic forces are embedded within a globalizing environment. The author articulates an original and compelling narrative, mapping the Mediterranean as a global place where international and regional forces are intertwined in multiple threads. In doing so, she identifies two key components of globaliz...

Mobile Orientations

Despite continued public and legislative concern about sex trafficking across international borders, the actual lives of the individuals involved—and, more importantly, the decisions that led them to sex work—are too often overlooked. With Mobile Orientations, Nicola Mai shows that, far from being victims of a system beyond their control, many contemporary sex workers choose their profession as a means to forge a path toward fulfillment. Using a bold blend of personal narrative and autoethnography, Mai provides intimate portrayals of sex workers from sites including the Balkans, the Maghreb, and West Africa who decided to sell sex as the means to achieve a better life. Mai explores the contrast between how migrants understand themselves and their work and how humanitarian and governmental agencies conceal their stories, often unwittingly, by addressing them all as helpless victims. The culmination of two decades of research, Mobile Orientations sheds new light on the desires and ambitions of migrant sex workers across the world.
