This book examines strategies of transformation (becomings, image-making, and the phantasmagoric) that figure in four stories and a novel by Gothic fiction writer Pilar Pedraza (Spain, 1951). While critics have long associated the Bildungsroman with Gothic fiction, this study takes a close look at the developmental process itself: the means by which a protagonist, young or old, might transcend a deprived status to achieve a complete sense of self. Pedraza's works imply that, regardless of the path followed, a character's ability to think differently is crucial to progress. Images of Women in Hispanic Culture
This book studies the ways traditional polarized images of women have been used and challenged in the Hispanic world, especially during the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century by writers and the media, but also in earlier time periods. The chapters analyze the image of women in specific political periods such as Francoism or the Kirchners’ administration, stereotypes of women in films in Mexico and Chile, and the representation of women in textbooks, among other topics. Contributions also show how two women writers, in the 17th and the 19th centuries, viewed the role of women in their society.

La ausencia de barba es un rasgo que distingue a la mujer del hombre desde tiempo inmemorial. Considerada como un ser anómalo y ambiguo, a la mujer barbuda no se le permitió existir fuera del espectáculo. En su versión más extrema, la mujer víctima del síndrome de Ambras, fue mostrada al público y divulgada por la publicidad como el «eslabón perdido» de Darwin o como un híbrido de humano y simio. En una época como la nuestra, el tema del cuerpo peludo y la fantasía animalista sobre lo femenino nos ayuda a detectar la abyección de lo diferente y la cosificación de la mujer, y a reconocer la importancia de la construcción social y cultural en la identidad de las personas.
