THE TWO ZIMBABWEAN WRITERS featured in this collection of stories and poems could not be more different. John Eppel is an English literature teacher in Bulawayo; Julius Chingono, from Norton, near Harare, was a rock-blaster in mines for many years. Eppel is a deliberate stylist, while Chingono is a deliberate anti-stylist. The western literary tradition is pervasive in Eppel's writing; Chingono is his own tradition. In another sense, however, they could not be more similar. Both share an aversion for those in power who exploit it to the detriment of all but their cronies and themselves; both feel a deep compassion for the poor and the marginalized of Zimbabwe. And they are both very funny.
Collaborative Poetry Translation
This volume provides an account of collaborative poetry translation in practice. The book focuses on the 'poettrio' method as a case study. This process brings together the source-language poet, the target-language poet, and a language advisor serving as a bilingual mediator between the two. Drawing on data from over 100 hours of recorded footage and interviews, Collaborative Poetry Translation offers both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the method in practice, exploring such issues as poem selection, translation strategies, interaction between participants, and the balancing act between the different cultures at play. A final chapter highlights both the practical and research implications for practices of collaborative translation. This innovative work is situated in an interdisciplinary framework of collaborative translation, poetry translation, poetry and creative writing, and it addresses concerns ranging from the ethnography of collaboration to contemporary publishing practice. It will be of interest to students, scholars, and specialists in translation studies, comparative literature, literary studies, and creative writing, as well as creative practitioners.
Valerii Pereleshin
Olga Bakich's biography of Valerii Pereleshin (19131992) follows the turbulent life and exquisite poetry of one of the most remarkable Russian émigrés of the twentieth century. Born in Irkutsk, Pereleshin lived for thirty years in China and for almost forty years in Brazil. Multilingual, he wrote poetry in Russian and in Portuguese and translated Chinese and Brazilian poetry into Russian and Russian and Chinese poetry into Portuguese. For many years he struggled to accept and express his own identity as a gay man within a frequently homophobic émigré community. His poems addressed his three homelands, his religious struggles, and his loves. InValerii Pereleshin: The Life of a Silkworm, Bakich delves deep into Pereleshin's poems and letters to tell the rich life story of this underappreciated writer.
Two Half Faces

Migrant Ecologies
Migrant Ecologies investigates the ways in which Zheng Xiaoqiong’s poetry exposes the entanglements of migrant ecologies embedded within local and global networks of capital and labor. The author contends that women migrant workers in particular, as portrayed in Zheng’s poems, are the visible manifestation of the interconnections between the so-called “factories of the world” and slum villages-in-the-city, between urban development and rural decline, and between the local environmental degradation and the global market. By adopting an ecological approach to Zheng’s poems about women migrant workers in China, the author explores what Donna Haraway calls “webbed ecologies” (49). The concept of “ecologies” serves to enhance not only the layered, complex interconnections underlying women migrant workers’ plight and environmental degradation in China, but also the emergence and transformation of migrant spaces, subjects, activism, and networks resulting in part from globalization.
