Ear-Centered Sensing: From Sensing Principles to Research and Clinical Devices, Volume II

This Research Topic is part of the Ear-Centered Sensing: From Sensing Principles to Research and Clinical Devices series: From Sensing Principles to Research and Clinical Devices, Volume I The human ears are an attractive location for bio-signal acquisition. Heart rate, respiratory rate, eye blink and eye motion signals and skin conductance, as well as the electrical activity from muscles and the brain can be recorded from the ear. Moreover, the ears provide a discreet and natural anchoring point for placing the necessary wearable hardware, thereby reducing the visibility of integrated devices. We define ear-centered sensing as monitoring physiological signals with sensors located in the ear...

Brain-Computer Interface Research

This book reports on the latest research and developments in the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). It introduces ten outstanding and innovative BCI projects, nominated as finalists for the BCI award 2012 by a jury of established researchers and discusses how each of the nominated projects reflects general worldwide trends in BCI development. At the core of the book, nine of these ten projects are described in detailed individual chapters. These include a focused introduction to each project, an easy to grasp description of the methods and a timely report on the most recent developments achieved since the submission to the award. Hence, this book provides a cutting-edge overview of the newest BCI research trends, from leading experts, in an easy to read format supported by explanatory pictures, graphs and figures.

Disability and Social Representations Theory provides theoretical and methodological knowledge to uncover the public perception of disabilities. Over the last decade there has been a significant shift from body to environment, and the relation between the two, when understanding the phenomenon of disabilities. The current trend is to view disabilities as the outcome of this interaction; in short from a biopsychosocial perspective. This has called for research based on frameworks that incorporate both the body and the environment. There is a great corpus of knowledge of the functions of a body, and a growing corpus of environmental factors such as perceptions among specific groups of persons ...

Complex Valued Nonlinear Adaptive Filters

This book was written in response to the growing demand for a text that provides a unified treatment of linear and nonlinear complex valued adaptive filters, and methods for the processing of general complex signals (circular and noncircular). It brings together adaptive filtering algorithms for feedforward (transversal) and feedback architectures and the recent developments in the statistics of complex variable, under the powerful frameworks of CR (Wirtinger) calculus and augmented complex statistics. This offers a number of theoretical performance gains, which is illustrated on both stochastic gradient algorithms, such as the augmented complex least mean square (ACLMS), and those based on Kalman filters. This work is supported by a number of simulations using synthetic and real world data, including the noncircular and intermittent radar and wind signals.

We have all become familiar with the term ‘eHealth’, used to refer to health informatics and the digital aspects of healthcare; but what is dHealth? This book presents the proceedings of the 13th annual conference on Health Informatics Meets Digital Health (dHealth 2019), held in Vienna, Austria, on 28 – 29 May 2019. In keeping with its interdisciplinary mission, the conference series provides a platform for researchers, practitioners, decision makers and vendors to discuss innovative health informatics and eHealth solutions to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare using digital technologies. The subtitle and special focus of dHealth 2019 is ‘from eHealth to dHealth’, wh...
