Visions of the end in Medieval Spain
Never before have all twenty-nine illustrated copies of the Beatus Commentaries on the Apocalypse been brought together for comparative analysis in a single volume. John Williams, renowned expert on the Commentaries, offers here his updated considerations on the material, revising and summing up a lifetime of study on these strikingly illuminated manuscripts. Dating from the early to central Middle Ages, the Spanish phenomenon of the Commentary on the Apocalypse responded to differing monastic needs within the shifting context of the Middle Ages. The volume also presents an in-depth study of the recently discovered Geneva Beatus. One of only three Commentaries written outside the Iberian Peninsula, this manuscript closely follows a Spanish model but was written in a Beneventan script and painted in a style dramatically different from the original.

The first of five volumes that will offer the entire corpus of extraordinary illuminations from 26 codices spanning the 9th to the 13th century, which contain portions of the Commentary on the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, compiled by the Asturian monk Beatus around the year 776. These illustrations represent the greatest single tradition of Apocalyptic imagery in the Middle Ages. The present introductory volume provides a general overview of the textual and visual tradition of all manuscripts containing Beatus' commentary. The Art of Brasília
People from outside of Brasília often dismiss Brazil’s capital as socially divided, boring, corrupt, and emotionally cold. Apparently its founders created not a vibrant capital, but a cultural wasteland. However, as Sophia Beal argues, Brasília’s contemporary artists are out to prove the skeptics wrong. These twenty-first-century artists are changing how people think about the city and animating its public spaces. They are recasting Brasília as a vibrant city of the arts in which cultural production affirms a creative right to the city. Various genres—prose, poetry, film, cultural journalism, music, photography, graffiti, street theater, and street dance—play a part. Brasília’s initial 1960s art was state-sanctioned, carried out mainly by privileged, white men. In contrast, the capital’s contemporary art is marked by its diversity, challenging norms about who has a voice within the Brasília art scene. This art demystifies the capital’s inequities and imagines alternative ways of inhabiting the city.
Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Africa
Protestants entering Africa in the nineteenth century sought to learn from earlier Jesuit presence in Ethiopia and southern Africa. The nineteenth century was itself a century of missionary scramble for Africa during which the Jesuits encountered their Protestant counterparts as both sought to evangelize the African native. Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Africa, edited by Robert Alexander Maryks and Festo Mkenda, S.J., presents critical reflections on the nature of those encounters in southern Africa and in Ethiopia, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Fernando Po. Though largely marked by mutual suspicion and outright competition, the encounters also reveal personal appreciations and support across denominational boundaries and thus manifest salient lessons for ecumenical encounters even in our own time. This volume is the result of the second Boston College International Symposium on Jesuit Studies held at the Jesuit Historical Institute in Africa (Nairobi, Kenya) in 2016.
