Nutritional Deficiency

Intake of a sufficient diet will provide an individual to live a healthy and functional life. However, poor intake of different nutritional components, such as proteins, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements, may lead to health problems that can cause morbidity and finally mortality. Assessment of nutritional status involves physical examination, comprehensive evaluation of biochemical tests, body composition, and organ functions. Both high and low intake of nutritional elements may lead to significant health impairment. The main aim of the book Nutritional Deficiency is to determine the relationships between nutritional status and general health. The authors, who are contributing to the bo...

Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic compound for hardening and clearing polycarbonate plastics. BPA is mainly classified as an estrogen-like endocrine-disrupting chemical. In the last decade, attention has arisen in scientific communities that it is not safe to use this chemical in mainly polycarbonate plastics. Exposure to BPA starts in prenatal period, which is the critical period for its toxic effects on different organs. Throughout this book, the readers will obtain information on the effects of BPA on different systems. They will also get information on the prenatal and postnatal effects of BPA. We believe that readers will get qualified scientific knowledge and a general overview of the toxic effects of BPA exposure and its consequences from this book.

This book combines the most recent knowledge on the maternal, i.e. oocyte/egg-specific, molecules and processes. The volume covers the most recent advances in a plethora of subjects such as: maternal transfer of immunity, localized RNAs functions and mechanisms of RNA localization, transcriptional repression of maternal messages, maternal inheritance and maternal role of CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing, chromatin remodeling and epigenetic modifications, maternal function of nucleosomes, maternal mitochondria and energy supply, role of bacterial symbionts and their maternal transmission, acquisition of oocyte polarity and evolution of maternal effect genes, germ plasm and oosome origin and functions, mechanisms of oocyte activation and soma germ cells communication. Currently, no other book on the market combines such a comprehensive list of subjects in one volume. Moreover, the information provided is a cross-section through oocytes from various invertebrate and vertebrate species, which is another unique feature of this book. The readers, therefore, get a completely new and invaluable perspective on all covered subjects.

Çocuğun Yüksek Yararının Korunması Bağlamında Aşı Karşıtlığı

Bu çalışma Türkiye’deki aşı karşıtlığı sorununu çocuğun yüksek yararını merkeze alarak aşı karşıtı ebeveynlerin aşıya yönelik algılarını, ebeveynlerde aşı karşıtlığı fikrinin ortaya çıkışını ve yayılmasında etkili olan faktörlerin keşfedilmesini ve sosyal hizmet perspektifinde değerlendirilmesini amaçlamaktadır. Aşı karşıtlığı fikrinin ebeveynlerin çocuklara aşı takvimindeki aşıları bilinçli olarak yaptırmaması şeklinde tanımlanan ve basit görünen bir eylemden ziyade, aşılara yönelik endişeleri, güvensizlikleri, olumsuz deneyimleri, sağlıklı çocuk algısını, aşı yaptırmamasını etkileyen faktörlerini, bilgi kaynaklarını ve toplum sağlığını içeren çok boyutlu bir süreci ifade ettiği anlaşılmıştır. Bu çalışma Türkiye’de halk sağlığı alanında çocuğun üstün yararı ilkesini referans alarak aşı karşıtlığının sosyal hizmet perspektifinden incelenmesi adına yapılan ilk nitel sosyal hizmet araştırması olma niteliğini taşımaktadır.

Glutathione in Health and Disease

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is the most important thiol in living organisms. It is the key component of antioxidant system and serves as a free radical scavenger. There is a cycle of GSH in biological systems and this cycle provides higher intracellular levels of GSH. GSH depletion and apparent oxidative stress may cause toxicity and can affect the general well-being of the organism. GSH was shown to be preventive against aging, cancer, heart disease, infections and dementia. This book is mainly focused on GSH in health and disease. The readers will gain qualified scientific knowledge on the diverse functions of GSH, the importance of GSH status against oxidative stress and the interaction between GSH and nervous system-related infections from this book.

Tropical Anemia

Anaemia is the common health problem all over the world. The term "tropical anaemia" means the anaemic disorders, which are predominant in the tropical region of the world. The purpose of this book is to summarise and present the topics specifically relating to the anaemia in the forms that is unique in the tropical countries. Due to the globalisation in the present day, the change in the epidemiology of diseases from one site to the others all around the world can be expected. The summative on the common anaemic problems in the tropical countries can be and should be performed. This book can make them at least realise the problems. The details of this book focus on the anaemia in the aspect...
