Common Prayer on Common Ground

Responding to the controversy and divisiveness within the Anglican Communion – particularly over the issue of homosexuality – Alan Jones offers a more balanced look at the middle way to be found within Anglican orthodoxy. With its focus on careful listening and prayerful deliberation, Jones’s vision of orthodoxy is the antidote to the anger and bitterness that threatens the Body of Christ today. In this thoughtful volume, Jones takes a look at Anglicanism from four different perspectives – fundamentalism versus modernism, the tired caricature of Anglicanism as “muddled thinking,” as an orientation toward transcendent mystery, and through the eyes of some of Anglicanism’s greatest exemplars.

The Chemistry of Pyrroles

The Chemistry of Pyrroles

The Chemistry of Pyrroles, Volume 34 aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the synthesis of simple pyrroles and to present, wherever possible, a mechanistic and theoretical rationale for the multitude of reactions known for pyrroles. The book discusses the structure and reactivity of pyrrole; the synthesis of the pyrrole ring; and the electrophilic substitution of the pyrrole ring. The text also describes the oxidation and reduction of the pyrrole ring; the rearrangement and addition reactions; and the ketones, aldehydes, and carboxylic acid derivatives of pyrrole. Alkylpyrroles and related compounds; hydroxy- and aminopyrroles and related compounds; and azafulvenes are also considered. The book further tackles the physico-organic properties of pyrrole. Chemists and researchers of pyrrole chemistry will find the text invaluable.

Sir William Jones, 1746-1794

Sir William Jones was one of the greatest polymaths in history. At the time of his early death, in 1794, he knew 13 languages thoroughly and another 28 moderately well. But languages were for him only a means of reaching a deeper understanding, in contrasting cultures, of law, history, literature, music, botany, and other disciplines. Elected at the age of 26 to Johnson's Literary Club and knighted at 37, Jones was a close friend to many leading English luminaries of his time. He was called "Oriental Jones" by some, and his study of middle-eastern cultures, his championship of American independence, and finally his appointment as high court judge in Calcutta, made him a truly universal figure. On the bicentenary of his death, several scholars met at University College, Oxford--his old college--to commemorate his outstanding career and achievements. They found representative themes in Jones's life and work, aiming to strike a balance therein, and to remember, especially, the view taken of Jones by his informed contemporaries. This collection of fascinating papers is a result of that meeting.

Learning, Unlearning and Re-learning Curves (Volume IV of the Working Guides to Estimating & Forecasting series) focuses in on Learning Curves, and the various tried and tested models of Wright, Crawford, DeJong, Towill-Bevis and others. It explores the differences and similarities between the various models and examines the key properties that Estimators and Forecasters can exploit. A discussion about Learning Curve Cost Drivers leads to the consideration of a little used but very powerful technique of Learning Curve modelling called Segmentation, which looks at an organisation’s complex learning curve as the product of multiple shallower learning curves. Perhaps the biggest benefit is th...

Risk, Opportunity, Uncertainty and Other Random Models (Volume V in the Working Guides to Estimating and Forecasting series) goes part way to debunking the myth that research and development cost are somewhat random, as under certain conditions they can be observed to follow a pattern of behaviour referred to as a Norden-Rayleigh Curve, which unfortunately has to be truncated to stop the myth from becoming a reality! However, there is a practical alternative in relation to a particular form of PERT-Beta Curve. However, the major emphasis of this volume is the use of Monte Carlo Simulation as a general technique for narrowing down potential outcomes of multiple interacting variables or cost d...

Advance Praise "From his pulpit at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Alan Jones has influenced for good an entire continent of struggling Christians. In this provoking and helpful new book, he extends his voice to those both within and beyond the Church. A thinking Christian in a thoughtless world is what he is and what he aims to make us. This is a very good start." -- The Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes The Memorial Church, Harvard University, and author of The Good Book "It used to be that Christian institutions and systems of dogma sustained the spiritual life of Christians. Increasingly, spirituality itself is what sustains everything else. Alan Jones is a pioneer in reimagining a Chr...

Practical Skills in Chemistry

Practical Skills in Chemistry

Practical skills form the cornerstone of chemistry. However, the diversity of skills required in the laboratory means that a student’s experience may be limited. While some techniques do require specific skills, many of them are transferable generic skills that are required throughout the subject area. Limited time constraints of the modern curriculum often preclude or minimise laboratory time. Practical Skills in Chemistry 3rd edition provides a general guidance for use in and out of practical sessions, covering a range of techniques from the basic to the more advanced. This ‘one-stop’ text will guide you through the wide range of practical, analytical and data handling skills that you will need during your studies. It will also give you a solid grounding in wider transferable skills such as teamwork, using information technology, communicating information and study skills. This edition has been enhanced and updated throughout to provide a complete and easy-to-read guide to the developing skills required from your first day through to graduation, further strengthening its reputation as the practical resource for students of chemistry and related discipline areas.
