Advanced Materials for Sustainable Developments
Contributions from three symposia that were part of the 34th International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC), in Daytona Beach, FL, January 24-29, 2010 are presented in this volume. The broad range of topics is captured by the symposia titles, which are listed as follows: International Symposium on Ceramics for Electric Energy Generation, Storage, and Distribution (debuted in 2010); Thermal Management Materials and Technologies (debuted in 2010); and lastly, and Advanced Sensor Technology, Developments and Applications (debuted in 2010). These new symposia emerged during this ICACC meeting due to community growth and interest, and thus each of these subject areas were established as stand-alone symposia. The current volume represents 15 contributions from the above listed symposia that embody the latest developments in engineering ceramics for energy technologies, thermal management utilizing either highly conductive or insulating materials, as well as advances regarding the utilization of ceramics for sensors.

Characterisation of the Mechanical Properties of Heat-Induced Protein Deposits in Immersed Cleaning Systems
During heat treatment in dairy production, the rapid formation of heat-induced fouling deposits on the plant surface leads to reduced efficiency of heat transfer. Therefore, a regular cleaning process is required to soften the heat-induced protein deposits and then remove them from the plant surface. The mechanical property of the deposits is one of the key issues of the cleaning mechanisms since the non-fractured behaviour dominates the deformation of the fouling layer and the failure behaviour has a great impact on the cohesive removal of fouling deposits. Killing Cancer
Despite the efficiency of current cancer treatments, cancer is still a deadly disease for too many. In 2008, 7.6 million people died of cancer; with the current development, it is estimated that the annual cancer death number will grow to 13 million by 2030. There is clearly a need for not only more research but also more innovative and out of the mainstream scientific ideas to discover and develop even better cancer treatments. This book presents the collective works published in the recent Special Issue entitled “Killing Cancer: Discovery and Selection of New Target Molecules”. These articles comprise a selection of studies, ideas, and opinions that aim to facilitate knowledge, thoughts, and discussion about which biological and molecular mechanisms in cancer we should target and how we should target them.
