Working Through Conflict

Focusing on the whole range of conflict settings - interpersonal, group, and organizational - Working Through Conflict, Third Edition, provides an introduction to conflict management that is firmly grounded in current theory and research. The text encompasses a wide range of theoretical perspectives and includes timely, up-to-date coverage of the role of third parties in conflict resolution. Numerous, highly practical case studies clarify theoretical content and make it accessible to a broad audience. Updated to reflect the latest research and theory, the third edition of Working Through Conflict includes new information on culture and conflict and the impact of cultural differences. Prefaced by new "Imagine Yourself..." questions that encourage the reader to assume the role of one of the disputants, each case study also ends with questions that highlight the theory behind the case and encourage classroom discussion.

Inter-ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria

Since 1982, Nigeria has experienced more than ten large scale ethnic or religious riots in its major cities. These violent clashes have wreaked economic, political, and social havoc; caused an enormous number of deaths and injuries; and posed serious obstacles to Nigeria's sociopolitical development as well as retarded efforts at nation-building. The papers collected in this book serve as a critical part of an overall objective to develop and promote mechanisms for the understanding and resolution of ethnic and religious conflicts in Nigeria. Both academic and community leaders address various aspects of these conflicts, and Uwazie offers several thoughtful options for their successful resolution. Inter-Ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria will interest students of African history and current affairs, scholars of anthropology and ethnicity studies, and those involved in international relations and peace studies.

Argumentation Machines

In the late 1990s, AI witnessed an increasing use of the term 'argumentation' within its bounds: in natural language processing, in user interface design, in logic programming and nonmonotonic reasoning, in Al's interface with the legal community, and in the newly emerging field of multi-agent systems. It seemed to me that many of these uses of argumentation were inspired by (of ten inspired) guesswork, and that a great majority of the AI community were unaware that there was a maturing, rich field of research in Argumentation Theory (and Critical Thinking and Informal Logic) that had been steadily re building a scholarly approach to the area over the previous twenty years or so. Argumentation Theory, on its side; was developing theories and approaches that many in the field felt could have a role more widely in research and soci ety, but were for the most part unaware that AI was one of the best candidates for such application.

THINGS HAPPEN AND THINGS HAPPEN AT WORK. SOME GOOD, SOME NOT SO. More often than not a situation at work emerges as a tangle of what people think and believe to be so animated by differing perspectives on what happened, who or what caused it, and what to do next. A puzzle of sorts and like all puzzles tests your ingenuity and knowledge. This tangle of circumstance is set against a familiar backdrop: the real organization, a web of employment rules, a need for information, can be characterized as a conflict of sorts necessitating a measure of negotiation and, of course, requiring a series of informed decisions. SO, LET’S FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE WISE CHOICES. When Things Happen at Work: Peopl...

It discusses new developments that have taken place in the past 15 years in research of legal argumentation, legal justification and legal interpretation, as well as the implications of these new developments for the theory of legal argumentation. Almost every chapter has been revised and updated, and the chapters include discussions of recent studies, major additions on topical issues, new perspectives, and new developments in several theoretical areas. Examples of these additions are discussions of recent developments in such areas as Habermas' theory, MacCormick's theory, Alexy's theory, ...
